The face paint stayed on for three days?

It?s impossible to know which special little memories will stay with you, but when you?re on holiday they come in buckets and spades. Even if we occasionally squabble (or constantly nag), our happiest times seem to be when we spend more family time together. And holiday time is special time.

A recent study found that the time working parents spend with their children rocketed from a measly 81 minutes a day to a massive 10 hours when the family?s on holiday. And it takes a whopping two whole months to clock up the same amount of quality time at home than we?d enjoy in just one week on holiday. They say time flies when you?re having fun?

The research found that in England, it?s parents from Newcastle who cram in the most treasured time with their children. 51% said they spent up to 12 hours a day with their kids when taking a break from the office, whilst it was 40% for Liverpool and 34% for Leeds.

Whether you?re from way up north or down in the deepest south, it?s the unexpected one-offs, the vivid little gems of memories that burn the brightest years on. Things like:

  • Making up an ingenious ?car game? in the backseat on your way there
  • Scaring your kids (and yourself) stupid with ghost stories near a crumbling old manor house
  • Taking a game of headers and volleys a bit too seriously at the beach
  • Spending a long late summer evening in a pub garden gossiping about your cousins behind their backs
  • Getting caught in a sudden downpour miles from the house
  • Your grandfather easing back into a chair that?s not there after winning Trivial Pursuit
  • Your sister refusing to wash the tiger face paint off for three days
  • Your cousin getting stuck in the toilet of the pub
  • Falling off the rope swing and into the canal (Yeah, its funny now)
  • Arguing with your brother for 15 minutes about who gets to sit in the front seat then realising that it?s the wrong car
  • Watching an enormous grasshopper seemingly spring out of your mother?s head
  • Foraging for creepy crustaceans in a rock pool and then running a mile when actually capturing a mean-looking Mr Claws
  • Your Uncle screaming ? SCREAMING! ? at a moth
  • Making best friends with a group of local kids that you?ve never seen since
  • Spotting bright green shooting stars (?hang on, were they stars?)
  • Being mesmerised by the roaring silence and the different smells in the countryside at night

With haunted abbey ruins, secret smuggler?s coves, acres of national forest and miles of bike trails, England is one vast adventure playground for the whole family to get lost in and enjoy. A self-catered break gives you the freedom to explore from your own designated family HQ. You come and go as you please, have meals when you want and get up when you feel like it (?when the kids wake up). It?s your holiday and it can be as unique as your family.
