Apple has Apple Stores, Samsung has... this!

Samsung store inside Phones 4u
You know those heady dreams of a new Samsung product launch today? Well consider them punctured. There's no new gadget to announce, but instead a teaming-up with UK retailer Phones 4u, offering a dedicated space for Samsung to dip its toes into retail waters. Located on London's Oxford Street -- and just around the corner from an Apple Store -- the shop-within-a-shop displays all of the Korean makers' big hitters, with several tables housing Galaxy Tab 10.1s, Galaxy Notes and Galaxy S IIs. The rest of that expansive galactic family dot the periphery of the room, but then you'd probably come here primarily to test-drive the aforementioned flagships. The tables themselves are dressed down; no pricing or carrier information clogging up the surfaces, just the devices and some Galaxy branding. Samsung's claimed the whole top floor and the shop is already training up dedicated Samsung staff to answer pressing questions like what's the point of the Galaxy Ace Plus whether that phone has Gorilla glass and when we can expect to see a Galaxy S III in the flesh.

Vatican cancels stem cell forum

(AP) ? The Vatican has canceled a stem cell research conference whose speaker lineup included scientists whose work involves human embryonic stem cells, a practice opposed by church teaching.

The Pontifical Academy for Life had organized the "Responsible Stem Cells Research Congress" for April 25-28 at the Vatican. But its website said that because so few participants had signed up, the event was canceled.

A Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Ciro Benedettini, quoted on Tuesday from an Academy memo blaming "organizational, logistical and economic factors."

"Unfortunately, the scarce number of sponsors and registrations would have adversely affected the positive outcome of the meetings, and therefore this prompted the organizers to take the necessary steps to cancel the conference," the Academy website's said.

Academy officials couldn't immediately be reached about media reports that the speaker lineup irked scientists opposing embryonic research, while others declined invitations for fear of lack of open discussion.

Among the invited speakers was Alan Trounson, president of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the state stem cell agency based in San Francisco.

"I am disappointed that the decision was made to cancel the conference because it offered the opportunity for a constructive dialogue on all types of stem cell research," Trounson said in a statement released by the institute.

"Open dialogue can enhance the field as a whole and accelerate our efforts to provide new therapies for patients in need," said Trounson, an Australian.

Tough Republican budget likely to go back on shelf

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The most powerful prescriptions of a tough House GOP budget plan, like a dramatic restructuring of Medicare and big cuts to domestic programs such as Medicaid, food stamps and transportation appear destined to go back on the shelf almost as soon as the measure is passed this week.

Instead, lawmakers will advance more pedestrian, politically safe goals: passing a routine round of annual spending bills as well as a special budget bill that would block automatic spending cuts to the Pentagon and domestic agencies from taking effect in January.

To protect the Pentagon and domestic priorities like education from $78 billion in cuts next year alone, House Republicans would substitute a larger, $261 billion set of spending cuts ? but ones that would take effect more slowly over the coming decade.

The result? A higher deficit in the coming budget year than if Congress simply put the government on autopilot and went home.

Such is the reality under the arcane way Congress writes the federal budget. First comes a measure called a budget resolution, and that's the measure being voted on by the House this week. It's a nonbinding, hypothetical, invariably vague measure that sets out a broad vision on taxes, spending and deficits but often contains unrealistic assumptions about the kinds of spending cuts lawmakers can really stomach ? whether Democrats or Republicans are writing it.

The House GOP budget that's headed for the floor this week is indeed loaded with bold, tough ? critics say draconian ? steps that if enacted into law would swiftly wrestle the budget deficit under control.

The follow-up legislation, however, is less ambitious. It's a round of annual agency budget bills and a special measure known as a budget reconciliation bill. A reconciliation measure is constructed by telling congressional committees to scrub the programs under their jurisdiction to find savings, which are then bundled together and passed on the floor.

This year, House GOP leaders are orchestrating such a measure, in hopes of both forestalling the automatic cuts and in placating tea party lawmakers unhappy that the party, while talking a good game on the deficit, isn't getting much in concrete results.

"Let's say, 'Hey, we're Republicans. We don't just talk about it,'" said Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan. "Actually pass something through the floor."

What is likely to make it into actual implementing bill later this spring, however, pales when compared with the sharp cuts called for in this week's nonbinding version.

The plan by Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., getting a vote this week calls for cutting President Barack Obama's latest budget proposal by $5.3 trillion over the coming decade, with $187 billion of those cuts coming next year. Many of those cuts, however, can't pass when it actually comes to implementing them ? especially in an election year.

Instead, the follow-up House budget measure ? the Senate has no plans for a companion bill ? would reduce deficits by just $261 billion over the coming decade, and by only $18 billion next year. Instead of sharp cuts to Medicaid, transportation and welfare, for example, the cuts will probably occur in federal employee pensions, farm subsidies, food stamps and other health care programs.

Even those cuts are likely to test Republicans, many of whom were not in Congress the last time it passed a deficit-cutting budget reconciliation bill in 2005. That measure was approved by a GOP-controlled Congress and signed into law by President George W. Bush, but getting it passed was enormously difficult for Republicans. It cut $100 billion over a decade.

The 2005 debate, for example, featured numerous power plays by lawmakers protecting parochial interests, including a dramatic, last-minute push by Ohio Republicans to reverse Medicaid cuts that would have hit Buckeye State manufacturers of oxygen equipment.

Meanwhile, there's no sign that another key element in the GOP budget will advance this year. It's a tax plan promising sharply lower rates in exchange for eliminating many popular tax breaks. The GOP tax reform plan would lower the top rate from 35 percent to 25 percent, but at the risk of eliminating deductions on mortgage interest, charitable contributions and state and local taxes. It's simply too controversial and difficult to do in a hyper-polarized election year.

Separately, House Republicans also promise to cut about 5 percent from domestic agencies whose operating budgets will be written by the appropriations committees later this year. But the move breaks faith with last summer's hard-fought budget pact and is likely to be reversed in any final deal next fall or winter.

The upcoming real-world budgeting follows moves last month to extend payroll tax cuts and jobless benefits and prevent a cut in Medicare payments to doctors ? adding $101 billion to the budget deficit for this year and $40 billion for the upcoming 2013 fiscal year.

That bill was partially paid for by about $50 billion in new revenues and spending cuts that accrue slowly over the coming decade.

'Agent Vinod': Bollywood espionage genre comes of age (IANS ...

agent vinod 05 Agent Vinod: Bollywood espionage genre comes of age (IANS Hindi Film Review) 3.5/5

IANS

Film: ?Agent Vinod?; Starring: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor

Directed by: Sriram Raghavan; Rating: *** 1/2

Believe me, it?s really a small world.Even though a film purporting to be as epic in proportion as ?Agent Vinod? travels all across the world to capture some of the most never-seen spots in the world, the plot ? an intelligent clever, urbane and wry melange of Bourne and Bond, ?Farz? and ?Mission Impossible?, finally finds its most assured resting-place in apana jahaan Delhi.

The last half hour where an international terrorist outfit attempts to blow up Delhi, gets the grammar of an espionage thriller so riveting and so right, you wonder what took director Sriram Raghavan so long to get there.

?Agent Vinod? is the kind of meticulously crafted spy drama where cerebral considerations mesh into more earthy demands of commercial Hindi cinema, like item songs in smoky bars, shootouts in dust toasted-brown locations that are as treacherous as they are daunting and, wonder of wonders, a clumsily-choreographed Mujra which doesn?t quite fit into the smooth storytelling.

Smitten more than we can eschew.

From its opening in a Taliban-infested area, there is no dearth of intrigue in ?Agent Vinod?. Agents, counter-agents, moles and molls, open-air flea markets and shopping malls jostle for attention in a script that appears to know its John le Carrre as well as its Nick Carter.

Raghavan spins a delicious yarn of guns and growls, but blessedly no gadgets. The action is crackling. The soundtrack is a chirpy mix of cheesy retro (RD and Asha Bhosle ?Meri jaan tune kaha? from the film ?The Train? pops up unannounced) and contemporary techno sounds.

Arts & Entertainment Articles ? Why The Psychology of Color Is ...

Abstract wallpapers are always excellent choices for contemporary art lovers and people who like dreaming away. Digital art has the power to create unexpected graphics that please the eye, and offer viewers a psychedelic visual experience. Computer generated fractals or just photographs taken from unusual perspectives can help people evade from their environments into a new, creative world of shape and color. When admiring abstract pictures, you can get the impression of an unreal experience, comparable to that of a dream, a fantasy or of an altered state of consciousness.
How do you choose your abstract desktop backgrounds? Some people are just impressed with the eerie feeling certain images give, some like to choose images depending on their mood, the day, the weather and so on. There are people who like to choose abstract images depending on their color and the effects that specific color has on the human brain. The psychology of color offers clues to the fact that different colors have different effects on people, and we could use color in a therapeutic way.

First of all, how do people perceive color? Actually, color is a subjective experience in our brains. Objects are perceived as having different colors depending on the frequency of the light they reflect. The cone cells in our eyes are specialized to perceive color and transmit the visual information to the brain.

Colors also differ when it comes to their cultural interpretations and their effects on people. For example, in Western cultures, black symbolizes death and mourning, while in the Korean culture, the color of death is white. The effects colors have on people are mostly similar in all cultures.

What is the effect of your favorite color on the human brain? Let?s have a look at what psychologists have to say about the power different colors have:

Red:
Red is said to have a stimulating effect on people. Researchers found that red could affect people?s reactions, leading to more rapid movements and a greater force. This stimulating effect can also have negative consequences, like agitation or lack of concentration. Scientists found that exposing students to red leads to a poor performance on a test. So, if you plan to change your desktop wallpaper before an important exam, it might be a better idea to choose cool colors and avoid red.

Blue:
Blue is a color that often induces calmness, relaxation, peace and serenity, because it can have the effect of lowering the pulse rate. Unlike red, blue stimulates creativity and has a positive influence on productivity. When you plan on working hard, choose blue abstract backgrounds for your computer, and you will be amazed of your own productivity. On the other side, blue can also create a sad, distant feeling.
Green:
When you feel stressed, change your desktop background to a green abstract image. Green is said to relieve stress and help body healing. A color of nature, green creates a feeling of calm and tranquility. Researchers also found that green has a positive influence on people?s reading ability.

So next time you choose a background for your computer, make sure the dominant color matches your mood and purposes. Abstract wallpapers can calm you or stimulate you depending on their color.

Pope visits Mexico pledging to fight drugs "evil"

LEON, Mexico - Pope Benedict arrived in Mexico on Friday promising to "unmask the evil" of drug trafficking in a country ravaged by gang violence that has killed 50,000 people in the past five years.

The pope began his three-day visit to the world's second-most populous Catholic state in the central city of Leon, where he received one of the most exuberant welcomes of any of his foreign trips.

Tens of thousands of people, 20 deep in some places, lined the streets on his 22-mile (35-km) drive through the city.

He touched down in Mexico after making strong statements aboard his papal plane about the country's spiraling drug war.

"We must do whatever is possible to combat this destructive evil against humanity and our youth," he told reporters, referring to the violent conflict between rival drug cartels and the state that has killed 50,000 people since 2007.

"It is the responsibility of the Church to educate consciences, to teach moral responsibility and to unmask the evil, to unmask this idolatry of money which enslaves man, to unmask the false promises, the lies, the fraud that is behind drugs," the pope added.

Raising his arms aloft as he exited the plane, Benedict descended the stairs slowly, holding the handrail. He was greeted by President Felipe Calderon and a group of children while crowds cheered and waved Vatican flags.

Addressing the masses gathered at the airport in a steady, measured tone, the pope, speaking in Spanish, said he had come as a "pilgrim of faith, of hope, and of love."

"I will pray especially for those in need, particularly those who suffer because of old and new rivalries, resentments and all forms of violence," said Benedict, adding that he hoped his message would also reach Mexicans outside of their homeland.

The bloodshed across Mexico was in the mind of many waiting to see Benedict in the city, a Roman Catholic stronghold that has avoided the worst of the brutal turf wars.

Throngs of Catholics dressed in white t-shirts and caps threw yellow and white confetti, having waited since early morning to see the pope pass. Many of them were young people let out of school for the day.

Several stood in front of a large banner that read "Pope, pray that the violence ends, pray that peace returns." "Violence is the country's biggest priority. There are some places where you can't even set foot outside it's so dangerous," said 16-year-old Martin Zamora who hung the sign with his Catholic youth group.

"Many young people have decided to join up with organized crime instead of fighting it. That's what the pope is coming here for, to help save young people."

Benedict, who turns 85 next month, will rest for 24 hours to recover from jet lag. His main message will be delivered on Sunday at a massive outdoor service that hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend.

The pope's strong words on the drug menace should offer comfort to Calderon, who has staked his reputation on beating down the cartels. The government's inability to stem the violence has eroded support for his conservative National Action Party (PAN), which has strong Catholic roots and faces an uphill struggle to retain the presidency in elections in July.

Calderon hailed Benedict's arrival, saying it was of great significance at a time of "many hardships" for Mexico.

"Mexico has suffered, as your Holiness knows well, the ruthless and cruel violence of organized crime," Calderon said in his welcome speech, which was followed by a performance of traditional folk dancers and mariachi musicians.

A survey by polling firm GCE published in the Milenio newspaper on Friday showed 72 percent of respondents wanted the pope to speak out on the security situation in Mexico.

ABUSE SCANDALS

Benedict, who also travels to Cuba next week, hopes to rally the faithful in Mexico, where more and more people are being lured to evangelical Protestant churches.

The German pope faces a challenge generating the same kind of fervor as his charismatic Polish predecessor, Pope John Paul II, who was beloved in Latin America and drew pulsating crowds when he criss-crossed the region during his 27-year papacy.

Highlighting the growing religious divisions in Mexico, a large Protestant church in Leon held a service with hundreds of worshippers on Thursday, prominently displaying a sign that read "We are not Roman Catholics.

The Vatican has been stung by accusations of child abuse by priests in parishes around the world - including revelations about Mexican religious leader Marcial Maciel, who founded a prominent Catholic order, the Legionaries of Christ.

Maciel, who died in 2008 at the age of 87, was disgraced by allegations of sexual abuse and drug addiction.

During the pope's visit, religious scholar Bernardo Barranco will present a new book by ex-Legionaries with scores of leaked Vatican documents the authors say prove the Holy See knew about Maciel's molestation of young boys and morphine use for decades.

"The enthusiasm (about the pope's visit) felt in Leon, is not the same in the rest of the country. The abuses by Father Maciel have cast a shadow," Barranco said in an interview.

Benedict has apologized for priest abuse in the past but has no plans to meet Mexican victims. 1

"There is so much suffering in Mexico that to narrowly focus on just one issue would be extreme," said Father Jorge Martinez, an official from Mexico's Episcopal Conference, when asked if the pope would address questions about Maciel's legacy.

The pope heads to Cuba on Monday in a visit meant to bolster the position of the Church there and help the communist island move towards democracy. Communism, he said on Friday, no longer works in Cuba.

The Benefits of Elder Care

Our seniors have taught us everything we know. They have reared us, and given us protection from the world and its evils while we grew up, then released us into that world to make out own way, and ideally, to enhance it for our children. They have taught us to "pay it forward"-- to do likewise for our kids. While we bear this in mind, we must also be aware that the possibility exists that there will come a time when are called upon to turn around and provide, or see to the provision of, that same caring dedication and protect those seniors. As world weary adults,(on occasion with husbands, wives, and children, or even grandchildren, of our own)it isn't always realistic for us to relocate our seniors to our own homes and give them the twenty four hour care they might need. Thus, we find ourselves in a situation where we are faced with the need to consider employing the services of an elder care expert.

This is one of the most difficult decisions modern adults are faced with. With a firm understanding of the information available, some loyal support from your family, and the input of a qualified elder care professional, you will be able to get through this.

No one welcomes the sleepless nights and constant concern that accompanies worrying about a loved one's safety when they live alone. The general consensus has been, however, that remaining in the home that they have worked so diligently to maintain for so long and being as independent as they can is at, or at the very least, near the top of almost all seniors' wish lists. There are a great many home care companies that have made elder care, providing companionship to seniors, and in home care their forte.

These companies have care givers that are available for the providing of an organized, safe environment for the car recipient around the clock, every day. Regardless of whether your loved one needs a couple of hours every day, or persistent supervision, there are many professional elder care professionals ready, willing, and able to give you the peace of mind you need, by seeing to your loved one's safety, happiness, and well-being.

It was once commonplace that when our elders reached a certain age, or for another reason, were unable to properly care for themselves or their homes, our decisions were between to very distasteful choices; we had to either move them in with us and take on the mantle of caregiver, or relocate them (a majority of the time, against their will) to a nursing facility. Thankfully, this is not the case anymore. Home care workers are a unique breed, these elder care professionals have specialized training that equips them with the knowledge and resources necessary to be your loved one's extra set of eyes, and that means they can sustain a very comfortable life continuing to live in their own home.

Customer Retention, A Rant | The Social Customer

?

Business is tough everywhere. ?As sales professionals, we struggle to find business and meet our quotas. ?Losing business that you had previously won is tragic. ?Over the past couple of weeks, a couple of companies that I have done business with have lost mine?perhaps not forever, but as a potential buyer, I will be very cautious about doing business with them again.

The first is one of our company?s banks. ?We keep accounts in a few banks around the world. Originally, we established multiple accounts to help make it easier for our people to do business. Each account is a reasonable amount (read six figures). ?Over time, I had noticed, things that we previously got for no charge, we are now being charged fees for. ?Additionally, there is wide variance in interest rates between the banks.

So I decided to start consolidating accounts. ?I called one bank, got my ?relationship manager,? a person I had never known about before but I suppose was assigned because of the type of account we had. ?I said I wanted to close the accounts we had with his institution. ?He was very polite and efficient in the transaction, at the end, he shook my hand and wished me a good day.

He missed something, he never asked me why I was leaving. ?He never tried to understand if he could do something to retain my business. ?He never tried to learn if there was something they might do to improve their service for accounts like ours. ?It was a tremendous missed opportunity. ?I suspect, he could have retained our business. ?I suspect, if we shifted the kinds of accounts we had with his bank, we might have reduced some of the fees we were incurring, or if we changed some of the things we were doing, we could avoid other fees.

But he never asked, he and his management will never know, never be able to avoid similar defections.

We?ve also done business with a computer company for close to twenty years. ?Virtually all our computer purchases have been from this company. ?Granted, we aren?t a huge customer, we?ve bought dozens of computers over the years, but not hundreds or thousands.

A few weeks ago, on a business trip, I had a problem with my laptop?it?s battery wasn?t charging. ?One evening in a hotel, I spent over an hour on the phone with a technician diagnosing the problem. ?We determined I needed a new battery and charging pack. ?I said it was critical that I get these as quickly as possible. ?I spend 80% of my time traveling and the battery is critical to keeping me functioning on the road. ?He assured me it would be delivered within a couple of days.

You probably can guess what happened. ?It didn?t arrive. ?I had the tracking number, found it was stuck somewhere, also learned it had been shipped the slowest least expensive way. ?I called the customer service department anxious to see if there was a way to accelerate the shipment. ?They couldn?t do anything. ?To their credit, they called me a couple days later, telling me that it would be delivered that day?I appreciated their tracking it and the personal touch of a phone call.

The battery arrived, I put it in, immediately started charging it, because I knew I had another trip the next morning. ?It didn?t charge. ?After a few hours of seeing nothing happen, I called customer service. ?I gave them the case number but the agent had to take me through the whole process again?my name, contact info, the computer serial number, the problem, everything. ?I asked, isn?t it in your notes on this case. ?He ignored me. ?After some time trying to diagnose my problem, he said he?d have to send me to another department. ?I was transferred, the agent went asked me to go back to ?Go,? not collecting $200, asking me all the same things again, frustrated, I said, ?I was just transferred to you, don?t you see all the information in the notes?? ?He reviewed them saying, ?Oh, I can?t help you, you need a different department.? ?Now I?m talking to the third agent, going through the same conversation?? ?Well, they said I needed to get a new battery and they would ship it immediately. ?I sighed, defeated, gave them the information and hung up.

Anticipating another few days, being crippled on another trip, I decided to call a competitor. ?I explained the situation, told them the urgency of my need, they had an immediate solution. ?They sold me a computer?they even offered to transfer all my files and data that day so I could take it on my trip the next day.

I?m still waiting for my battery, but as I type this post, I?m sitting in an airport lounge, between flights, thoroughly enjoying my new computer. ?Their understanding of my situation, going the extra step of helping me out with my programs and files has won them a customer for a long time. ?The other company?the one we did business with, by default, well I?ll use my old laptop as a backup machine. ?However, as we make new purchases, they will all be with the new supplier.

Business is tough; serving your customer post-sale is important to earning their continued business. ?If they leave, try to understand why, see if there is something you can do to retain them. ?If you can?t at least learn.

Clearly, the second case was a failure of customer service. ?They were following their procedures?the problem was they were following their procedures. ?They didn?t have the ability to, even for a fee, deal with a customer that had a crisis and needed the problem solved.

In the first case it was sales error. ?There were no penalties to the sales person for losing my account. ?All he was measured on was new business. ?Perhaps we should measure people on lost accounts. ?If they earn commissions for winning business, perhaps they should lose commissions for not retaining business?there are some organizations that do this and it makes a difference.

What are your strategies for customer retention? ?Do you see if you can keep them? ?Do you learn from them if you can?t?

What are your strategies for customer experience? ?Do you have the ability to respond to their need, or do you follow your policies?

?

'Workaholics' Rep Hard For Sum 41, Best Coast In Musical March Madness

'They're gonna snap Bon Iver's neck, they would crush Metallica,' Kyle Newacheck says of Sum. Voting in round two is already under way!
By James Montgomery

The Workaholics
Photo: MTV News

MTV's Musical March Madness tournament has moved on to the second round, leaving plenty of heavily favored bands by the wayside, in a smoking pile, dreams shattered (MMM is nothing if not dramatic).

And so, with voting in all round-two matchups currently under way — polls close Sunday at midnight ET — we figured now was a perfect time to gauge the temperature of the tourney with the guys from Comedy Central's "Workaholics." After all, they know a thing or two about smoking (we can't vouch for their dreams, however).

Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket!

We caught up with stars Adam Devine, Blake Anderson, Anders Holm and Kyle Newacheck at their rather epic South by Southwest party, and perhaps it was due to the free-flowing beverages — or the cornholing — but, boy, were their predictions off base. In fact, of all the bands they picked, only three still remain in MMM. So while their dreams may not be shattered, their brackets definitely are. But still, you've got to give them credit for their enthusiasm ... and their ability to throw a killer party. So here's who the "Workaholics" have winning it all in Musical March Madness.

"Maroon 5 for the win. Adam Levine, I'm going to fight you over our name. I'm Adam Devine, I get so many tweets every day like, 'I love you on "The Voice," ' " Devine said. "Truthfully, [I'm going] Black Keys versus Jack White in the finals, Black Keys take the win. Sorry, Jack, go tanning or something, you're freaking us all out."

"I'm going Bruce Springsteen versus Best Coast [in the finals], and Bruce just barely nudges her out," Anderson added. "That'd be a great show. I'd see that show."

OK, so just in case you haven't been paying attention, Maroon 5, the Black Keys and Bruce all lost in the first round. Best Coast are still kicking, of course, but right now, they're locked in a tight battle with "American Idol" fave James Durbin, who shocked the world by knocking off #1 seed the Foo Fighters in round one. So, Bethany, it's time to rally the troops — a spot in the Sweet 16 is at stake.

And while Devine and Anderson may have swung and missed in their picks, the same can't be said about Newachek, who's repping hard for dark-horse candidates Sum 41, who rolled all the way to the Elite Eight last year, and appear poised for another deep run this year. Having already taken down #2 Bon Iver, they currently lead #7 Metallica by a slight margin.

"I'm going Sum 41 all the way. They're gonna snap Bon Iver's neck, they would crush Metallica," Newachek said. "Sum 41, keep it rocking."

"I used to look like that kid, the bass player," Holm added. "You know [as a] thinner young man."

MTV's 2012 Musical March Madness tournament has reached the second round. Voting runs until midnight ET on Sunday, March 25, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act is still alive, it'll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — but get ready, it only gets more difficult from here on out.

Daily Deals Aggregator Frugalo Acquired By TwitVid (But No, It?s Not Getting Into Deals)

frugaloFrugalo, a daily deals aggregation platform that emerged from?AngelPad's third group of startups last fall, is being acquired by social video site TwitVid. As you may have guessed, the move was more about bringing Frugalo's founders on board than it was an indication that TwitVid is now interested in the daily deals market. However, some of the personalization technology in use at Frugalo will make its way over to the social network as a part of the deal. Frugalo's founders, CEO Mike Cieri and Scott Reynolds, say they discovered a shared passion with what the?TwitVid team is doing, given both companies' focus on the creation of social experiences to help users discover and share. But finding kindred spirits at TwitVid wasn't the only thing that pushed Frugalo in this direction - the changes in the daily deal space also influenced the founders' decision, they admit.

Motivated Online ? Poke The Box

I think it?s really valuable to have a discussion about how the market is shifting and changing. There?s no doubt that?s the reality we all face as entrepreneurs; we need to be able to shift within our own markets and adjust accordingly. So why don?t you talk to me about the ?Domino Project? and your new book, Poke The Box.

Well, the question is ?Who is your customer??

If you?re an author like me, your customer is the publisher. Who is the publisher?s customer? Well, if you?re a major publisher, your customer is the bookstore. And, if you?re the bookstore, who is your customer? The answer is the reader.

That?s a lot of steps! And one of the reasons that book publishing is broken is that readers are demanding that people talk directly to them. And what makes a bookstore happy, or what makes a publisher happy, might not make the reader happy. For example, should a Kindle book ever cost $19.99? The publisher might be able to justify that, but the reader can?t!

So what I decided to do is to stop being a hypocrite (and take my own advice) and to write for my?readers ? to build a company that publishes directly to the readers.

Our job is to help authors find and connect to their readers. And we will win, as a company, if we?re able to earn the privilege of permission, of talking to the people who want to be talked to. We?re fortunate that Amazon is powering and backing what we?re doing so we have an easy way for people to find and buy and transact with us. We have the ability to find people who have shown interest in similar stuff in the past, and we can then create a relationship directly between us and the people that read our stuff.

You pretty much only have two choices if you?re going to write books. One choice is to write for the very few who buy a lot. They tend to be women, but there are also business people in that group and they have broad interests. These are people who love to buy books, who buy a lot of books. If you make a book that makes them happy, you can do OK.

The other kind of writing you can do is for people who don?t buy books ? people who buy The Da Vinci Code, and Eat, Pray, Love. You know when one of those books becomes a major bestseller, it?s because it?s the ONE book that lots of people bought all year. Those books get sold at Walmart and other places as well.

My thesis is that the people in the first group ? the people who love to read books ? also love to talk about them, and they love to share them. Now, if you can make it easy for people who buy books to spread, talk about them, share books with people who DON?T buy books, you can actually grow the market considerably.

And so, our books come in a 5-pack, in a 52-pack, or they come individually. They come in a collectable edition, they come in lots of different ways ? different books for different readers. And the beauty of it is, if you read a book and you love it, and you can buy additional copies of it for six or seven dollars to hand out to your friends, you might. And I don?t need very many people to buy multi-packs for it to be important. I mean, it looks like 30-40% of all the sales we make are going to be from the people who purchase books and give them to other people.

I?m just laughing to myself because I?m definitely in that market about gifting knowledge to other people!

Well you know, I?ve never written books to make a living ? it?s really hard to make a living off writing books. I?ve written them just to spread the ideas. And for me, success is when people start talking about these ideas even though they haven?t read the book. When you hear people talking about building a Purple Cow, or being a Linchpin, and they don?t even know there is a book ? that means I?ve succeeded in getting the idea off the page and into the real world.

What is it that you?re most afraid of ? or does that not exist here?

Well, I experience fear all the time, the difference is that I?m rarely paralyzed by it. It would have been easy enough not to do the book at all, and just post it on my site. But it?s more important to ask myself,

?What?s the scariest thing I can imagine doing?? ? Because, that?s exactly what we?re here to do?work that matters.

I?m not worried about people not liking the book. I hope that some people don?t like the book ? that means I?m pushing somebody. I am worried a little bit about sort of ?disappearing? because we didn?t do things that were bold enough, but I?m hopeful that so far, what we?ve done is interesting and worth talking about.

Well, it sounds like it?s coming from an authentic place?and so people will talk! What was it about this particular topic that was so valuable for you to share? What are you hoping resonates with people?

Well, you know, how is it that people like you can come out of nowhere and start a magazine that touches tens of thousands of people and have an impact and make a living at it and other people just whine and are stuck where they are? What is it about some organizations, like Amazon and Nike and Apple and Starbucks and Jet Blue, that permit them to do noteworthy things while other ones, I dunno, like Nokia, find themselves going backwards?

It?s not that they have dumb people, it?s that there isn?t a culture of initiation. There isn?t a culture of starting; of raising your hand, and speaking out, of leaning forward and screwing up and learning and doing it again.

So I wrote Poke The Box, a very short book, and its intent is really simple ? it?s saying this is the asset of our future. You can be in the magazine or book business without having a printing plan, you can be in the shoes business without actually making shoes, and you can be in the computer business without making computers, but what you can?t do, you can?t do anything unless you initiate it ? that?s the asset of the future.

And, did you come to any conclusion about whether that?s a genetic thing or a cultural thing or?? I mean, I?m always fascinated by entrepreneurs and it seems to me that there?s that spark and that flame that gets fanned into an inferno and you?re right?it starts with initiative. Why do you believe it exists for some but not?

(Interrupting) Go spend some time in kindergarten. What we notice in nursery school and kindergarten is that a whole bunch of people seem to have initiative. A whole bunch of people think that they can draw. A whole bunch of people think they?re capable of erasing the board. A whole bunch of people are happy to volunteer. And sometime between being five and seventeen we intentionally burn it out of almost everybody.

There are reasons for that but we don?t need to worry about them now, only to know that it?s true. And so the question is, ?If we have burnt it out of you, is there a way that you can get it back??

And I think the answer is, ?Sure you can?.

Look at people who have initiated through history, they?re not divided by gender or race or age or culture, it?s just that along the way, they?ve decided to get back into doing it.

I wish you all the success in the world and I?ll be thinking of you March 1st when Poke The Box is launched. And despite what happens, you took the initiative and you took the challenge and in the end, it doesn?t really matter right? Off you go to keep moving it forward!
