When two chatbots have a conversation, everyone wins (video)

What did one chatbot say to the other chatbot? Quite a lot, actually -- but good luck making any sense out of it. That's what researchers from Cornell's Creative Machines Lab recently discovered, after pitting two bots against one another for a good ol' fashioned talk-off. It's all part of the lab's submission to this year's Loebner Prize Competition in Artificial Intelligence -- an event that awards $100,000 to the team whose computer programs can conduct the most human-like conversations. Unfortunately for Cornell's squad, their chatbots still have a long way to go before achieving conversational coherence, though they could easily get hired as anchors on most cable news networks. Throughout the course of their frenetic (and often snippy) discussion, one bot raised heady questions about God and existence, while the other boldly claimed to be a unicorn. Basically, they had the exact same conversation we used to have in our dorm rooms every night, at around 4 am. Watch it for yourself after the break. It's nothing short of sublime.

Pearl takes job as marketing VP in Knoxville

(AP) ? Former Tennessee basketball coach Bruce Pearl accepted a job as vice president of marketing with a Knoxville-based wholesale grocery company, bypassing the chance to coach the Texas Legends of the NBA's developmental league.

He will begin working at H.T. Hackney on Thursday. The company is led by Chairman and CEO Bill Sansom, a former University of Tennessee trustee.

"It's really an answer to prayer," Pearl told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "This is where my family is. This is where I want to be. Everybody looks at me as a coach, but I'm a father and a husband, and I've got to provide for my family."

Pearl was fired in March after six seasons at Tennessee in the wake of a two-year NCAA investigation that culminated Wednesday with a three-year show-cause penalty against the coach. The sanction makes it nearly impossible for another school to hire him during that time.

He had considered an offer to coach the Legends of the NBA's developmental league, but he said he wanted to remain in Knoxville. His two oldest children live and work in Knoxville, while his youngest two children are in high school. His wife, Brandy, is from nearby Sevierville, Tenn.

Pearl majored in marketing and economics at Boston College. He said he would have pursued a career in marketing had he not gotten into coaching in 1982.

"I am a former basketball coach at the University of Tennessee, and I'm very proud of almost everything that we accomplished," he said. "I'm excited about this new challenge. I'm going to bring the same level of passion and intensity. This is a championship team already. Nobody in the industry does that better. I'm learning that quickly."

Sansom said he asked Pearl several months ago if he'd considered taking a non-coaching job with a local company.

"A couple of weeks ago I was having dinner with Bruce and Brandy, and he was talking about Texas and if he really wanted to go to Texas, and I said, 'You ought to talk to us,'" Sansom said.

H.T. Hackney is a privately held company with annual revenues of about $4 billion. Sansom and Pearl declined to reveal Pearl's salary.

Sansom said he felt Pearl fit the company's culture and said he had no problem if Pearl wanted to pursue coaching again in three years.

"I hope Bruce has so much fun he won't want to leave, but if he's got that passion and has an opportunity, that's not a problem for either one of us if he wants to do that when the time comes," Sansom said.

Why Transform To Windows Vista Element four of fourWhy Modify To Windows Vista: Element four of four

It?s the viewpoint of the Tennessee Mountain Man that in the last evaluation, most individuals and companies would be much better

served to remain with what ever operating program they at present run assuming the have not currently ?upgraded? to

Windows Vista.

MS#76. ?Mainly because everything the relatives need to have a copy of that distinctive shot?

Some details are just so effortless, real and apparent that remote on-line personal computer repair helpdesk can?t argue with them.

MS#77. ? Capture a second in an immediate. Now release it just as speedily?

O.K. The additional factors Alter, the additional they keep the similar?.particularly with Microsoft.

MS#78. ?Simply because you have got extra approaches to take your music with you wherever you go?

Not new?just new styles, improved size, and much better access instances.

MS#79. ?Let your music collection develop with you?

Load up on Gerber?s? What?

MS#80. ?Given that you happen to be a media master?

Computerman is master of practically nothing, dacomputerman is married! Computer system man runs nothing at all but his mouth.

View the disclaimer Microsoft snuck in on this child!

MS#81. ?Due to the fact it tends to make your Television smarter?

Tennessee Mountain Man has been watching Television Mainly because ahead of the Amos and Andy Display (sorry youngsters, never be concerned about

it), and despite the fact that TVs have gotten smaller and their screens greater and colorful they have not gotten smarter.

In fact, the situation can be created they have been truly dumbed down Mainly because the Huntley and Brinkley Report (I know I did it

once more). They need to have one thing to generate them smarter, but this is decidedly not it.

MS#82. ?Presenting your new property entertainment hub: your Personal computer?

May be, I suppose. But, seriously?on-line pc repair has additional crucial utilizes for computer systems than to be utilised as

high-priced hubs and switches and pleasure routers.

MS#83. ?It tends to make your desktop come alive?

What did I do with amount for Ghost Busters? I never want it? What I do not have to have is a thing to eat up extra memory

on an currently exceedingly slow operating technique.

Far better load up on that USB RAM.

MS#84. ?Sit back, unwind, and pass the remote?

And, use it on the gear it was created for not the personal pc.

MS#85. ?Your Personal pc can be multilingual?

Sounds like Windows XP to dacomputerman.

MS#86. ?Archive your media library?

Back up?.back up?back up. Haven?t we covered that a handful of occasions currently?

MS#87. ?Play the hottest new games?

On XP if you never require to expend the revenue to move on?which Microsoft plans to ultimately attempt to force you to do so.

MS#88. ?Take your game past the subsequent degree?

Can you say ?Treckie??

MS#89. ?Take your games to go?

Sorry, the very first thing that comes to thoughts is the miffed infant taking his ball and stumping house.

You can do absolutely nothing here that you could possibly not do just before.

MS#90 ?Examine your e-mail devoid of booting up your Laptop?

Try to remember this: ?Some item characteristics are only on the market in particular editions of Windows Vista and might need to have

advanced or extra hardware??

That is appropriate it haunts these halls like a negative dream you can not escape. Caveat emptor is the rule for Windows Vista much more

than any other operating process released to date by Microsoft.

MS#91. ?Take your exciting with you?

There is lots of zero cost on-line back up and storage on the market from anyplace with a personal computer connection.

MS#92. ?Displaying is additional effective than telling?

Yes, I am afraid It?s every little thing down hill from this point. Like remote on line helpdesk 1 stated just before, it doesn?t seem Microsoft has bumped into an original despite the fact that Given that Win 95 and Win NT?if then.

MS#93. ?Operate your own way?

Mainly because Microsoft may well not or at least did not develop a thing new here perhaps they may possibly do like The Tennessee Mountain Man (da computerman has been diagnosed with CHF and Colon Cancer) and leave a request that ?I Did It

My Way? be sung at their funeral.

MS#94. ?Given that you need your wireless connection to be extra safe?

Superior Luck! Someday?perhaps

MS#95. ?Take network files and folders with you?

D?j? vu

MS#96. ?Access your desktop wherever you go?

Oh, this is sooo coool, soooo neeeew, we have only been working with it a handful of many years now.

MS#97. ?Due to the fact your home business does not desire additional than a single scanner?

schhhhhhh! It is toooooooo effortless?..let it lie.

MS#98. ?Generate your presentations even more qualified?

Like Microsoft?s reasoning?

MS#99. ?Mainly because you get much more out of specifics despite the fact that you share it?

Then why has Microsoft usually fought sharing every thing?

MS#100. ?Given that your network is the backbone of your home business?

Alright. Sure It really is genuine, but it nevertheless does not Adjust something! tmm

Penalty reduced for golf team after racy photo

updated 5:45 p.m. ET Aug. 27, 2011

LINDSBORG, Kan. - Bethany College golfers will now miss only one tournament this fall as punishment for posing nude for a team picture.

Coach Jon Daniels told the Salina Journal on Saturday that the penalty was reduced from three meets to one, but the central Kansas college's players must fulfill other stipulations.

The team got into trouble when 14 members stood in a line with their shorts at their ankles, only golf clubs hiding their genitalia, for an unofficial team photo.

One of the players posted it on his Facebook page.

Daniels says players who mess up during the year will be suspended from a second tournament. Team members must write a letter of apology and do a presentation about the perils of social media.

top incorporation mistakes

Now more than ever, forming a corporation or LLC can be a pretty quick and painless process. Yet while the process may be straightforward enough, small business owners can unknowingly make some common missteps that can have a significant impact on the business.

Are you guilty of any of these top incorporation mistakes?

guilty verdict

1. Selecting the wrong business structure

Your business entity affects the amount of taxes you pay, the employee benefits you can offer, the amount of paperwork you deal with and more. In the U.S., the three most common business structures are the LLC (limited liability company), S corporation and C corporation. All three entities protect the personal assets of the owners from liability, yet differ when it comes to tax treatment, etc.

  • The LLC is great for small businesses that want liability protection, but prefer minimal formality and paperwork.
  • The S corporation is a pass-through entity for federal taxes (like the LLC) and is great for small businesses that can qualify.
  • The C corporation files its own tax report and should be selected by those companies that plan to reinvest profits back into the company or seek funding from a venture capitalist.

What are some of the common mistakes made when it comes to business entity? For example:

  • A public relations consultant creates a C corp for his business, then discovers what ?double taxation: means when he files his business and personal tax forms. His CPA advises him to elect pass-through S corp treatment to avoid this the next year.
  • Two friends form an S corporation for their new catering business. However, they?re stuck paying taxes in direct proportion to their ownership, even though they?ve actually arranged to allocate the profits 75/25 the first year since one was responsible for significantly more work. Instead of the S corp, they should have formed an LLC so they can have more flexibility when it comes to dividing the profits and their taxes.

2. Picking Delaware or Nevada for the state of incorporation if you have fewer than five shareholders

Many business owners think they should choose between Delaware or Nevada when incorporating or forming an LLC. And, yes, Delaware offers some of the most developed, flexible and pro-business statutes in the country. Nevada offers low filing fees, and has no state corporate income, franchise or personal income taxes. However, these two states aren?t necessarily the best choices for every business.

For the small business (defined here as one with fewer than five shareholders), it?s better to incorporate in the state where you have a physical presence. Otherwise, there can be too many hassles associated with operating out of state. These include difficulties opening a business bank account, having to appoint a registered agent, and fees for operating as a ?foreign entity? in your own state.

3. Hiring an attorney to file and send in the incorporation forms

With legal document filing services, you don?t actually need to hire your own lawyer to form an LLC or corporation. In this case, the online service can help you represent yourself to create a business entity. The service can ensure that you have provided all the necessary paperwork right to your state?s specifications. However, a legal document filing service is not allowed to give you advice regarding your specific situation.

Therefore, if you have a particularly complex partnership or financial situation, you should seek the counsel of an attorney.

4. Not keeping your corporation or LLC in compliance

Keeping your LLC or corporation compliant is essential, and continues long after you filed your initial application. A plaintiff may try to show that you have not maintained your LLC or corporation to the letter of the law, and if that attempt is successful, your corporate shield will be pierced, putting your personal assets at risk. To keep your corporation or LLC in compliance, you need to:

  • Keep your personal and business expenses separate (this is particularly important if you?ve formed a corporation)
  • Send in your Annual Statement/Annual Report on time, as required by your state of incorporation
  • File for foreign qualification if you?re operating in any state(s) other than your state of incorporation
  • Send in your Articles of Amendment for any key changes to your business
  • Don?t engage in any form of fraud.

5. Biggest mistake: Never incorporating at all

The top mistake a small business owner can make is never forming an LLC or corporation in the first place. This puts your key personal assets (savings, retirement fund, property, etc.) at risk.

By avoiding these five common missteps, you can better protect your assets, minimize your liability, lower your expenses and enjoy a legally structured business for years to come.

Not your grandfather's granny ? Health & Fitness ? Bangor Daily ...

Healthier and more involved, today?s grandparents are shunning retirement homes and stepping in more than ever to raise grandchildren while young adults struggle in the poor economy.

The newer grandparents are mainly baby boomers who are still working, with greater disposable income. Now making up 1 in 4 adults, grandparents are growing at twice the rate of the overall population and sticking close to family ? if their grandkids aren?t already living with them.

Grandparents in recent decades have often filled in for absent parents who were ill or battled addiction, or were sent to prison. The latest trend of grandparent involvement, reflected in census figures released Thursday, is now being driven also by the economy and the graying U.S. population, including the 78 million boomers born between 1946 and 1964 who began turning 65 this year.

?We help out in terms of running errands, babysitting, taking the grandkids to doctors? appointments, and for back-to-school shopping,? said Doug Flockhart of Exeter, N.H., listing some of the activities that he and his wife, Eileen, do for their five kids and seven grandchildren. But that?s just the start.

They also pitch in with health care payments for family members due to insurance gaps, and their pace of activity has picked up substantially since their daughter, who lives three blocks away, gave birth to her first child this month. Flockhart, a retired architect, likes the family time even if he and his wife worry about their grandkids? futures. Their oldest grandchild is 16.

?It?s not so much the day in and day out, it?s the big picture as to how these young kids will grow up and pay for a college education and buy a house,? he said. ?The middle class is so much less well-off than it used to be. We?ve put aside some savings for them, but with seven grandchildren it can only go so far.?

Flockhart?s situation is increasingly common, demographers say.

?Grandparents have become the family safety net, and I don?t see that changing any time soon,? said Amy Goyer, a family expert at AARP. ?While they will continue to enjoy their traditional roles, including spending on gifts for grandchildren, I see them increasingly paying for the extras that parents are struggling to keep up with ? sports, camps, tutoring or other educational needs, such as music lessons.?

The latest numbers are based partly on separate analyses by Goyer and Peter Francese, founder of American Demographics magazine who is now a population analyst for the MetLife Mature Market Institute. Their data were supplemented with the latest 2010 census figures as well as interviews with Census Bureau and other experts.

Currently about 5.8 million children, or nearly 8 percent of all children, are living with grandparents identified as the head of household, according to 50-state census data released Thursday. That?s up from 4.5 million, or 6.3 percent, who lived in such households in 2000.

Much of the increase in grandparent caregivers occurred later in the decade after the recession eliminated jobs for many younger people, surveys indicate. The 8 percent share of children now living with grandparents is the largest in at least 40 years ? and it is believed to be the largest share ever, the population experts say.

In all, there are 62.8 million grandparents in the U.S., the most ever. They are projected to make up roughly 1 in 3 adults by 2020.

Nearly half the states had increases of 40 percent or more over the last decade in the number of grandchildren living with grandparents. They were led by states such as Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Arizona and Kentucky, which had influxes of young families or suffered higher rates of poverty.

On the other end of the scale, New Jersey, New York, Michigan and Louisiana saw the smallest increases, less than 10 percent. Each of those states saw slower population growth overall since 2000, particularly among young people.

The District of Columbia posted a decline of more than 20 percent in grandchildren living with grandparents, a sign of growing gentrification in the nation?s capital in which smaller-sized white families are replacing black families with grandparent caregivers, who are moving to suburban areas.

Francese says the stereotype of grandparents who are frail, receding and dependent is changing. He noted that unemployment among workers ages 25 to 34 last year was double that of Americans aged 55 to 64. U.S. households headed by baby boomers also commanded almost half of the nation?s total household income, and are more likely to be college graduates than grandparents in previous generations.

These grandparents reject living in senior communities in favor of ?aging in place? in their own homes, near family. In 2009, households ages 55 or older spent billions of dollars on infant food, clothes, toys, games, tuition and supplies for grandchildren, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

?Grandparents are supposed to be old, gray-haired people tottering around, but the vast majority are actually in the work force,? said Francese, who released a paper on the topic last month. ?There is not much doubt that the recent recession has brought grandparents and grandchildren together.?

The government figures come as a congressional supercommittee considers possible reductions to Medicare and Social Security to achieve $1.5 trillion in federal spending cuts under the terms of the debt ceiling agreement. Up until now, lawmakers? proposals to cut the entitlement programs have met resistance from older Americans, including those 45 and older, who now make up a majority of the voting-age population.

The committee must issue its recommendations by late November, with action by Congress before year?s end, or various parts of government will face automatic spending cuts.

Estella Hyde, 65, who lives near Erie, Pa., said additional government aid ? not spending cuts ? would go a long way for grandparents. She and her husband have raised their granddaughter, now 18, off and on since she was a year old, when Hyde?s daughter-in-law at the time said she didn?t want the burden.

Eventually the Hydes were able to adopt their granddaughter legally, which allowed her to have coverage under their health plan, but only after the couple fought through red tape and paid $10,000 in adoption fees. After a difficult childhood, her granddaughter will attend college this fall.

?It never happens in a happy situation where a son or daughter comes and says, ?I need you to raise a child for me,?? said Hyde, a nursing professor who is now retired. ?We were very lucky, we were able to financially take care of her and support her. But many grandparent caregivers need other sources of assistance.?

In all, the states with the highest shares of children living in households headed by grandparents are in the South and West. They include Hawaii, Mississippi, Louisiana, New Mexico, South Carolina and Texas, each with at least 1 in 10 children living in grandparent households.

Among the states with high concentrations of grandparents overall ? regardless of their living arrangement ? are Maine, West Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania, Iowa and New Hampshire, according to some estimates.

Greetings and Salutations

I'm finally breaking my three year hiatus from play-by-post roleplaying, dusted off the assorted books and guides I use to branch ideas off of, and cracked the typing knuckles and prepared for some good old fashioned roleplaying.

A little about me:
I've been roleplaying just about all my life. It started when I was a little boy, running around in the back yard waving a large stick around in the air pretending it was totally awesome sword that I would use to slay the dragon and save the princess. When I was ten, I was introduced to Final Fantasy 7. Needless to say, I never went back outside and started waving a stick around again. From there, I went on to games such as Final Fantasy 8 - 12, The Legend of Dragoon, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Grandia, Star Ocean, and many others. With the advancement of gaming consoles, I moved on to games including The Elder Scrolls series, Star Wars: The Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Two Worlds. My friends began playing many tabletop games like Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer 40K, Inquisitor, and a few White Wolf games. Not having enough money to afford miniatures and paint, I instead began taking characters or armies my friends used and writing stories about other adventures and conflicts they were involved in as well as writing about what happened during gaming sessions that I attended. Then they all got involved in World of Warcraft and I dropped them like a sack of bricks because I don't like that game.
As an adult, I've gotten more involved in some tabletop games that I enjoyed watching be played like Inquisitor and Warhammer 40K, although what little collection of miniatures I have is lost somewhere in the deepest and darkest corner of my U-Haul storage and I am too afraid to venture back there for fear of something terrible grabbing me and nobody ever being able to find my body. I continued writing stories following my character or armies giving my own personal people personality and a history.

However, I slowly drifted away from tabletop gaming and roleplaying. I put all of my Dungeons and Dragons and Warhammer 40K books into a box along with my miniatures and haven't seen them since, I've sold or lost most of my console RPGs and replaced them with Call of Duty and Battlefield. All my writing is stacked in a box somewhere at my parent's house or saved on an ancient computer that will probably blow up if ever turned back on.
But, good news! I've decided to get myself back into it and after enduring a small amount of ridicule from my wife, I am now ready to get back on that horse and start roleplaying once again.

I can play just about any character (I prefer dark and menacing characters and I can't play females very well), I can play just about any genre (I thoroughly enjoy fantasy and medieval genres or sometimes sci-fi). I do enjoy long and narrative posts because I love both reading and writing and always enjoy a RP more if others do the same. I don't like seeing one-line posts or just dialogue with no description because I can't envision what's going on. All I see in my mind is a stick figure talking. I am a stickler for proper spelling and grammar but won't call someone out on it unless it is a continuous problem. And I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of RolePlayGateway.

Also, I absolutely hate asparagus. But that's a totally different story.

How Management Improves Sales Performance and How It Gets In the Way

The Business Process Management Life-Cycle

Image via Wikipedia

Does Sales Management mean there?s management in sales? How many roles are there in sales for management? And does that management add any value or simply get in the way? This is a complex question anybody involved in selling needs to understand.

Learning to manage the management should be the first class in sales training, but never is.

The Task Master

Most people will recognise the activity sales manager role ? the one where the task master collects numbers of calls, presentations, proposals and deals closed. Here?s where the manager bullies the under performers ? Get on the phone, get out on the street, kiss more frogs, or get another job.

The Hero

Lucky sales people will recognise the hero role. The manager is the superstar sales professional ? coaching the rep on what to and how to do it. This guy is the hero ? called in to manage the difficult ones. Everybody loves this guy, and especially the hero. It?s the ultimate ego trip.

The Secret Weapon

Particularly in the B2B world there?s also a role for the non-sales executives. The CEO, or CFO, or COO, or technical architects are brought into the sales process to supplement the proposition. In this type of business arranging for the buying company CEO to meet with the selling company CEO is pure gold ? provided the the two get on, of course.

That?s three roles experienced sales professionals will recognise. What?s the fourth?

The Fixer

Henri Fayol taught the world about management nearly one hundred years ago. He explained his theory and fifty years later consultants picked up on the concept. Read Fayol?s work, or even summaries you?ll find in Wikipedia. Netting it down, Fayol said ?Figure out where things go wrong, then make changes to stop them doing it again?.

Unfortunately most sales managers don?t get involved in management theory. The bully or the hero roles are more easily understood. But Fayol?s theory has proved correct, in production and supply chain.

Isn?t it time sales organisations adopted the concept?

That?s the background to Sales Probability Process Management ? a methodology which recognises nothing can be understood by measuring outputs alone. The defects which undermine performance can only be uncovered, and rectified, by monitoring and understanding the process.

Sales organisations which rely on activity, good fortune and superstar sales magicians never succeed ? in the end. The secret to success in sales operations is finding a value proposition and a process which the average sales rep can make work, and then finding ways of improving it.

Octomom: 14 Kids in Private School, 0 Jobs

Nadya Suleman is no stranger to financial hardship. Heck, it's so well known that Vivid has a boilerplate sex tape offer on file and ready to send out.

We didn't even consider education, though.

Private school, no less! ALL 14 of her offspring are, according to reports, enrolled in an expensive private school. The octuplets? Not even three years old.

Octomom Boxing Pic

"She was bragging about having all of her kids in private school, even though the eight youngest are only two-and-a-half years old!" a source said.

"She can't even pay the mortgage, but she doesn't seem to care."

Tuition at the Los Angeles County school where Nadya's children attend is a minimum of $6,000 per year, per child, for the eight pre-schoolers.

How can she justify that kind of expense? Nadya thinks that by shoving her kids in school, it will free her up and give her time to make money.

How, besides selling revolting childbirth scar pics?

"She's working on becoming a personal trainer, but for now she does the boxing stuff to make money," said the source close to the Octomom.

As for her six oldest children, the 36-year-old mother gets a 25 percent discount (phew!) on tuition because she has more than four enrolled.

What a steal.

Just two months ago Nadya Suleman was behind in payments on her La Habra, Calif., home again, with the lien holder threatening foreclosure.

"She told me she'd rather have her kids educated than worry about her bills," the source said. "But I have no idea how she's paying for it!"

You're not the only one, unnamed maybe-fake Radar source. She sucks.

She also hates kids, and said as much? How do you despise children when all your entire life is based around having massive amounts of them?

Theories and comments are welcomed.

Home Improvement | Bathroom Remodeling | Art Deco

In two previous blogs, we?ve looked at historical bathroom remodels in the Victorian- and Craftsman-era styles. Today we conclude this series with a look at an Art Deco bathroom remodel.

Art Deco was a style that first became popular during the Roaring 20s. World War I had ended and a feeling of prosperity and frivolity reigned. Women had the right to vote, jazz music was all the rage, transportation was modernized, and skyscrapers were becoming a soaring fixture in big cities.

Consequently, Art Deco is an eclectic mix of styles, yet a few things definitely stand out: sleek aesthetic, symmetrical geometric shapes (which took their cue from the discovery of King Tut?s tomb in 1922 and the immediate craze of Egyptomania that overtook the world), and bold bright colors like yellow, green, blue, purple, ruby and turquoise. Patterns such as zigzags, sunbursts, chevrons, and Moorish arches were popular architectural elements added to homes and buildings. Building materials become more opulent with the introduction of tiles, steel and glass, which added glitz to the homes of the rich and famous. As the Great Depression hit and World War II loomed on the horizon, the Art Deco craze died out and gave way to the stark realities of the day.

Nevertheless, today Art Deco remains a popular style, and an Art Deco bathroom remodel will give you a bathroom that is both fashionable and historic. If you?re undertaking an Art Deco bathroom remodel, here are a few pointers to keep in mind.

  • Bathing niches were a popular feature. Stand-up shower stalls and semi-enclosed bathtubs were often recessed into the wall and set off with arched openings (Moorish arches). This gave a modern look and concealed the plumbing behind the wall.
  • Tile was huge for walls and floors in both square and octagonal shapes and in bright colors. The colored tiles were often outlined with black tiles and elaborate patterns of black tile as a border, often taking the place of baseboards at the floor. The pattern was repeated about halfway up the wall where the tile ended.
  • Pedestal sinks were popular, their lines reflecting the lines of the modern skyscrapers. If you?re fortunate enough to live in a historical home and have an original pedestal sink, hire a professional for a sink refinish. It will restore your sink to its original beauty, and the cost is cheaper than that of buying a new one. You can do the same thing for an original tub. A bathtub refinish can restore an old one to pristine condition.
  • Glitzy finishes were popular in the Art Deco craze. Look for polished chrome or nickel faucets and frameless etched-glass medicine cabinets to set an opulent tone in your bathroom.

Indulge your taste for glitz and glam with an Art Deco bathroom home improvement. It?s a historic style with modern appeal that will be a showstopping transformation.

New heart scan may speed up diagnosis with less radiation

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2011) ? New technology appears to provide faster, more accurate heart scans for both viewing blood vessels in the heart and measuring blood supply to the heart muscle, while exposing patients to less radiation, researchers report in Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, a journal of the American Heart Association.

In preliminary tests from a small trial of 39 patients, computerized tomography (CT) scans called 2nd generation 128 Slice Dual Source "Flash" CT captured quicker images of the entire heart, allowing doctors to better see artery blockages and reduced blood flow through the heart. This was accomplished using a tenth of the radiation of current CT scans, the standard test for diagnosing and pinpointing the location of heart disease.

The CT scan uses a high-pitch "Flash" CT scan technique, which enables an ultrafast scan time.

A contrast agent and vasodilatator is injected into the patient's blood vessels to help highlight certain areas.

"The new exam is faster and more convenient for the patient," said Gudrun M. Feuchtner, M.D., a study co-author.

The new technology captures images of the entire heart in less than 0.3 seconds -- within one heart beat -- as compared to 6 seconds and several heart beats for conventional CT scans.

For accuracy, the new scan was compared to cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and invasive angiogram, which involves snaking a catheter through an artery in the groin or arm to the heart. An angiogram, and sometimes MRI, requires contrast dye.

Compared to cardiac MRI, 78 percent to 95 percent of the time the new CT correctly identified restricted blood flow and correctly ruled it out 84 percent to 94 percent of the time.

Compared to invasive angiography, the new CT had 90 percent accuracy in detecting significant blockages. The new CT's accuracy improved to 95 percent when added to CT perfusion -- a scan taken after using contrast dye.

The scan proved particularly useful in patients with advanced heart disease or diabetic patients who reported no symptoms, but were found to have areas of poor coronary blood flow, Feuchtner said. Because people with diabetes may have nerve damage, they may not always experience the chest pains that typically accompany reduced blood flow to the heart.

"Those patients would not immediately seek a cardiologist, but would have a poor prognosis," said Feuchtner, a professor in the Department of Radiology at the Innsbruck Medical University in Innsbruck, Austria.

The study findings can also help to plan heart surgery more accurately, according to Andr? Plass, a co-author and cardiac surgeon from University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland.

The new technology answers two questions with one scan: whether the blood vessels of the heart are narrowed and whether there is reduced blood flow.

"This can have important implications for cost savings and efficiency as two studies are done in one setting," said Ricardo C. Cury, M.D., co-author of the study and chairman of radiology at Baptist Health of South Florida.

Larger studies are needed before the new technology is widely used, researchers said.

Co-authors from University Hospital Z?rich, where the study was performed, include: Robert Goetti, M.D.; Andr? Plass, M.D.; Monika Wieser, M.D.; Hans Scheffel, M.D.; Christophe Wyss, M.D.; Paul Stolzmann, M.D.; Olivio Donati, M.D.; Johannes Schnabl, M.D.; Volkmar Falk, M.D.; Hatem Alkadhi, M.D., M.P.H.; Sebastian Leschka, M.D.; Ricardo C.
