The Learning (Philippines/United States, 2011) | VCinema | Asian ...

Ramona S. Diaz?s follow-up to her award-winning documentary?Imelda (2003)?yet again explores the parent-child dynamic that defines the relationship between the United States and the Philippines. Seemingly obsessed with the way that identity, culture, and power intersect with each other, Diaz?s sophomore film? The Learning(2011)?is an empathetic portrait of four female teachers who gamble everything they have to work in the Baltimore City School District under the auspice of providing some financial security for their families back home. The great historical irony in the film?s premise is that, at the start of the 19th century, during America?s first attempt at Imperialism, the United States had taken it upon themselves to dictate not only the curriculum being taught in Philippine schools but also mandated that English be the primary language spoken in the classroom. Over a hundred years later as American school systems found themselves facing budget cuts, teacher strikes and failing test scores, the Philippines former benefactor came a-knocking and, just as they had done several decades ago when they began culling the medical schools and hospitals for nurses and later on physical therapists, the educational recruiters came.

Although clocking in at less than 90 minutes and having only shot for one year during these teachers? lives, The Learning?perfectly captures the pain, sorrow and emotional compromises that most newly arrived Filipinos must make when they first arrive in the States. The four protagonists in Diaz?s documentary, though divided by age and life experiences, share much in common. All four are women, they each have families (immediate as well as extended) that they must support, each has primarily worked in the Philippine public school system as either math, science, or special education teachers, and they are all somewhat naive about the challenges ahead of them.

The most experienced teacher, Dorotea Godinez, is much loved by the pupils in her rural classroom back in the Philippines.? Crying and singing, they bid her a farewell song on her last day.? However, in her Baltimore classroom, her vibrant personality shrinks each day as her students whittle away at her patience and confidence. Though not for her lack of teaching ability since even her superiors admit that the students test scores in Dorotea?s class have improved since her arrival, but as Dorotea herself states, there is a wide gulf between a Filipino student and American student?s definition of respect.? While children in the Philippines have been taught to show respect through supplication, her Baltimore City students constantly abuse and exploit the motherly attention she bestows upon them. Watching Dorotea?s evolution in the classroom, one can?t help but yell at the screen, wishing for her to stop playing the victim and take control of her class again.? But, a fear of losing her job keeps her from doing anything other than making empty threats.

Suffering less from idealistic notions about teaching, Angel Alim-Flores and Grace Amper have left everything they know and love to chase after the American Dream, symbolized by the paychecks they receive and the money they dole out to their families back home. As the sole breadwinner in her family and still in her mid-twenties, Angel?s expression of anger and frustration toward her father, who continually pumps her for more and more money, is quite palpable.? Her displeasure at the situation occurs even as she takes pleasure being the family?s sole financial lifeline, the main cause of stress for many newly arrived Filipino immigrants. To their families back home, who live far below the poverty line, the United States really does seem like a country paved with gold and literal money trees. Of course the reality for these women is that they have debts and bills to pay; plane tickets and Visa requirement fees alone cost several thousands of dollars.? And though these women constantly send money back home, animosity can quickly grow between family members who perceive that they?ve been ?forgotten? by their far more fortunate cousins, siblings, or even daughters. For 32 year old Grace Amper, the pain of being forgotten is far greater since her goal of building a dream home for her husband and child has cost her the chance to hear her infant child?s first words or be there for his first steps.? This is a price she begins to pay when she returns to the Philippines and her son is completely oblivious to who she is, and cries whenever she tries to hug him.? Grace is even mistakenly called an aunt by the maid and nanny that she is paying to take care of her child and husband. This calls into question whether providing for her family is even worth the pain if she is thought of as nothing more than a stranger or worse, a human ATM machine.

What makes? The Learning?such a remarkable film is the way it up-ends your expectations and portrays Filipinos as not just the grinning nice person you work or are acquainted with. Coming from such a religious and traditional culture as the Philippines, these women evolve and change, running the gamut of emotions as they try to balance school and the home lives they?ve temporarily put on hold. Diaz?s film is a documentary not just about the sudden cultural clash that newly arrived immigrants feel when they first arrive, though. In fact, The Learning?is very much a feminist study of how a patriarchal society like the Philippines is trying to cope with an exponentially growing female population that has taken over the traditional male role of provider and exploring exactly where this shift in gender dynamics will take the country.? This is a situation perfectly exemplified by Rhea Espedido, the fourth teacher we follow, who seems at first to be a quiet introverted type coming to the States primarily for a paycheck.? Later on, however, we learn that underneath that calm exterior is a woman running away from an unhappy marriage. Her journey, in my opinion, is the most fascinating to watch since you initially expect her milquetoast personality to crumble under the stress of moving to a foreign country and the eventual disintegration of her marriage.? But, instead of being defeated, she thrives under these anxieties and embraces her new found independence. She becomes in a very realistic way a symbol of Filipina feminism, adopting Western ideas of female empowerment and unselfishly thinking about her needs without compromising Filipino notions about family, playing mother to her children all the while staying married to a man she feels no love for.

These women?s futures are still being written by their daily choices and the uncontrollable variables that affect everyone, but?The Learning is a powerful film during its most quiet and unassuming moments. Be it Angel showing her class a videotape she made of her trip to Disneyland, Grace?s Skype calls to her husband and infant son, or Rhea?s tearful conversations with her husband as she always attempts, but eventually fails, to leave him. Ramona S. Diaz?s film captures the crippling loneliness and isolation that all OFWs, Overseas Filipino Workers, must feel.? However, as the Philippines become more and more dependent on the money that this new class of overseas workers provide (According to Diaz?s film in 2010, twenty billion dollars were sent back to the Philippines to support extended families there) what will become of the country when the cash flow eventually dries up or worse when the workers decide to abandon their roles as indentured servants to their country as well as their family?s back home?

* You can view Ramona S. Diaz?s film ?The Learning? for free until October 20, 2011 at PBS? POV?website.

The Indie Fix: Winter is Coming : Videogame News & Reviews | Bits ...

Win?ter is Com?ing is a very small browser game made by what might be an unnec?es?sar?ily large team that lets you play as a fly?ing squir?rel col?lect?ing nuts before the onset of win?ter. This isn?t some car?toon furry in an action packed side scroller either, this is more of an actual sim?u?la?tor. An incred?i?bly sim?ple one per?haps, but it does hold some appeal. Seri?ously, I have twenty other games I want to cover in half the num?ber of days, yet here I am talk?ing about this?one.

The game is very rough around the edges (made in about a week), and won?t take up more than a small amount of your time, but is a fun lit?tle dis?trac?tion worth try?ing out. You can run around on the ground, climb trees, scope out where all the nuts are hid?ing, then soar majes?ti?cally through the air try?ing to col?lect five of the lit?tle bug?gers before time runs out, and win?ter?comes.

The game also fea?tures some strange and twisted sound and music, which feels oddly appro?pri?ate for some?thing that?s meant to be a squirrel?s eye view. The faster you run, the more fran?tic and crazed it becomes. Turn it up real loud and drive the peo?ple around you nuts! (get it, nuts! Cause it?s a squir?rel? Bah, no appreciation.)

That?s it, that is the entire game. Nev?er?the?less, it?s uncom?mon in its pur?pose, and tries to do some?thing a lit?tle dif?fer?ent. Worth at least 15 min?utes of your?time.

Win?ter is Com?ing can be played here.

Small dent in jobless rate seen from Obama's plan

(AP) ? Even if Congress heeds President Barack Obama's demands to "pass this bill right away" and enacts his jobs and tax plan in its entirety, the unemployment rate probably still would hover in nosebleed territory for at least three more years.

Why? Because the 1.9 million new jobs the White House says the bill would produce in 2012 falls short of what it's needed to put the economy back on track to return to pre-recession jobless levels of under 6 percent, from today's rate of 9.1 percent.

That's how deep the jobs hole is. The persistent weakness of the U.S. economy has left 14 million people unemployed and more than 25 million unable to find full-time work.

Economists of all stripes pretty much agree that it will be a long, hard road no matter what Congress does. Right now, the Republicans who run the House and the Democrats who lead the Senate aren't finding much common ground.

Obama estimates his American Jobs Act would lower unemployment by just a single percentage point by next year, to just over 8 percent, heading into the 2012 presidential election.

Burned before by making overly optimistic job-creation predictions, the White House turned to prominent outside economists to crunch the numbers.

The projection of 1.9 million new jobs, a 1 percentage point drop in the unemployment rate and a 2 percentage point increase in the gross domestic product under Obama's plan came from Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Analytics.

But Zandi said in an interview his forecast also is based on an assumption that "the president's entire package is passed by the end of the year," a slim prospect given the current divided leadership in Congress, and that there are no other budgetary policy changes.

"I assumed that it would be paid for," Zandi said. "I didn't know when I did that simulation how the president proposed to pay for it."

Since then, Obama has said he would pay for his $447 billion package with permanent income tax increases of about $150 billion a year, mostly on wealthy individuals and corporations, in addition to spending cuts. That's drawn criticism from Republicans, who say any tax increases could further stall the fragile recovery.

Zandi, who has advised both Republican and Democratic lawmakers, said he's still sticking with his forecast, mainly because the stimulus in the plan, including a temporary reduction in Social Security taxes for both employees and employers and infrastructure spending, would come in 2012 and be paid for later.

But there is one feature Obama doesn't emphasize.

Zandi said his job-creation figure only applies to 2012.

"Beginning in 2013, and certainly into 2014, the plan is a drag on the economy because the stimulus starts fading away," he said. "So by 2015, the economy is in the same place as now, as if there were no jobs package."

Also, Zandi said, his forecast does not leave any room for a new recession. If that happens, all bets are off.

"So it's very important to get as many people working as fast as possible," he said. "If we go back into recession, it is going to be very difficult to get out. And it's going to cost taxpayers tremendously."

Job creation has ground to a virtual standstill. The economy produced a scant 20,000 net new jobs in June, 85,000 in July and none in August. Economic output, as measured by the GDP, has been growing this year at an anemic annual rate below 1 percent.

The global economy is showing no signs of strengthening. A divided Federal Reserve is nearly out of ammunition for additional stimulus. And the U.S. is once again facing the possibility of a government shutdown at the end of next week.

The Obama-Zandi target of 1.9 million new jobs next year, or 158,000 a month, is somewhat higher than private analyses that suggest the plan would create 100,000 to 150,000 jobs a month.

Heidi Shierholz, economist for the labor-leaning Economic Policy Institute, calculates it would take job growth of 400,000 every month for three years in a row to get back to the 5 percent jobless rate last seen in December 2007, at the recession's outset.

"To get down to 5 percent in five years, we need around 280,000 jobs every month," she added. "Right now, we're more than two years into the official recovery, and we're still bumping along at extremely low levels."

What if Obama gets none of what he requested? She said failure to renew some current anti-recessionary programs such as extended unemployment insurance and the existing Social Security tax break for employees "will be a big blow" both to the economy and to the employment picture.

More likely, Congress will probably produce a watered-down version.

As long as the GDP grows at an annual rate beneath 2.5 percent, it cannot create enough jobs for new entrants into the workforce, let alone to re-employ those laid off during the downturn, said Martin Regalia, chief economist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the nation's biggest business lobby.

The chamber estimates it will take 20 million jobs over the next decade to get the economy back to pre-recession levels. It has its own jobs plan, which includes increased trade, greater oil drilling, quicker road and bridge construction and temporary corporate tax breaks.

"If you want to go from 9.1 percent down to 5.5 or 6 percent unemployment, you're going to have to grow roughly at 4.5 percent (GDP) for three years," Regalia said. "I don't see that in the forecast."

In the first six months of this year, the GDP grew at a scant 0.7 percent rate. Private forecasters see it growing about 2 percent in the final six months of 2011, about 2.5 percent throughout 2012, and increasing to about 3.2 percent in 2013.

Obama is quick to acknowledge a rocky road ahead.

"For a decade now, incomes and wages have flat-lined for the American people ? for ordinary Americans, for working families," he says. "They are working harder, making less, with higher expenses. And that's been going on for a long, long time."

German pope faces toughest visit to skeptical homeland (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? Pope Benedict starts his most difficult visit yet to his German homeland on Thursday, touring mostly Protestant and atheist regions in the ex-communist east after previous visits to Catholic strongholds in the Rhineland and his native Bavaria.

The country's religious and political complexity presents challenges for the 84-year-old pontiff, who is German but radically out of step with the way his homeland has developed, especially since its reunification in 1990.

Every word he utters during the state visit -- especially in his address to parliament in Berlin on Thursday or an Erfurt meeting with Protestant leaders on Friday -- will be weighed, analyzed, hailed or slammed by his supporters and critics.

Benedict's predecessor John Paul always met rapturous crowds in his Catholic Poland. The pope from Catholic Bavaria can expect less deference from the Protestants of old Prussia or the atheist generations raised in communist East Germany.

But he has chosen to stride straight into the lion's den, addressing on his first day the Bundestag (lower house of parliament). About 100 deputies -- almost one-seventh of the legislature -- plan to boycott the speech in protest.

On his second day, he will meet Protestant leaders in the Erfurt monastery where reformer Martin Luther lived as a Catholic monk before posting the 95 Theses in 1517 that inspired the Reformation and split western Christianity.

PROTESTANTS WANT COOPERATION

The Protestants, whose ranks are roughly equal with those of German Catholics, want to celebrate the 500th anniversary of that event in 2017 with nationwide celebrations emphasizing Luther's contributions to Christianity and German culture.

Their question now is how far the Catholics will cooperate.

Benedict is the first pope who really knows and understands Protestants. Will he speak of Luther as a heretic? Praise him for reviving Christian interest in the Bible?

Will he stress how important Luther's Bible translation was for the development of the modern German language.

German Protestants and Catholics will be listening carefully when he answers these questions in Erfurt on Friday.

Benedict will meet on Thursday with President Christian Wullf, a Catholic who has divorced and remarried in defiance of Church rules, and Chancellor Angela Merkel, a Protestant who has urged him to focus on improving ecumenical relations.

He also plans an open-air Mass on Thursday in Berlin's Olympia Statium, built for the 1936 Games meant to glorify Adolf Hitler's Third Reich, as well as meetings with Germany's Jewish and Muslim minorities.

After talks with Protestant leaders in Erfurt, he will travel to nearby Etzelsbach to meet a small Catholic community that defiantlyh withstood persecution under the communists.

Benedict will end his German tour in the mostly Catholic southwestern city of Freiburg.

Frankincense In Aromatherapy ? Trees, Tears As well as Essential ...

The Unexplainable Frankincense

Used for a lot of thousands of many years, the Frankincense tree has probably the greatest association along with spiritual practice associated with any plant on the planet. In most from the great ancient ethnicities, including the Silk, Babylonian, Persian, Hebrew, Ancient greek and Roman cultures, it has played a job in religious as well as domestic life. Frankincense may be sought after through kings and appreciated as highly because gold. More lately, the essential oil is gaining interest with spiritual searchers and natural healers as well. What is so special relating to this tree that its ?pearls? received as a gift in the birth of among history?s most adored prophets?

The Hardy Tree and it is Tears

The Frankincense sapling, or Olibanum, on first glance, might seem rather unremarkable. Seems like as a huge shrub, with numerous knurled branches capped with abundant slim leaves and from time to time, small white blossoms. A native in order to northern Africa, it appears like it belongs within the desert, growing in a few of the world?s harshest problems. But it isn?t the tree by itself, but rather its sap which has such profound lore encircling it. When the tree?s start barking is pierced having a knife (known traditionally like a ?Mingaf?), a milky-white oleoresin is actually exuded ? believed the tree isn?t harmed. The resin forms droplets referred to as ?tears? or ?pearls?, which harden to the orange-brown gum recognized itself as Frankincense. The English name of the natural incense hails from the medieval France ?franc?, meaning ?pure? or even ?free?, and in the Latin ?incensium?, which means ?to smoke?.

History?s Most widely used Incense

For a lot more than 5000 years, the hardened resin may be burned in temples or wats throughout Egypt, The far east and India; the Catholic church is constantly on the use it these days during Mass. It is among the four main elements in Jewish ceremonial incense, forming an important the main Sabbath day choices. The smoke associated with Frankincense (as along with other ritual incense) is considered to carry prayers in order to heaven upon it is smoke. It can also be said to deepen the breath but still the mind, which makes it useful for deep breathing and yogic exercise. The incense might have health benefits too, producing a extremely antiseptic smoke, keeping churches and churchgoers free of disease.

According in order to ancient documents, the great Baal forehead of Babylon consumed 2 . 5 tons of Frankincense annually. The Frankincense industry was of enormous importance in historic times, peaking about 2000 in years past. Caravans grew to as much as 2 to 3 thousand camels in dimensions. Cities grew up across the trade routes, as well as heavy taxes as well as fees for safety, lodging and camel fodder raised the price of the resin substantially, so much in order that it was valued around gold. The wealth included inspired Alexander the truly amazing to plot to manage the region, although his death occurred to preceed the actual invasion.

Health Advantages

Frankincense resin is thought to possess a bounty of wellness properties ? it had been an ingredient inside a rejuvenate face cover up in ancient Egypt (it had been also charred and used since the classic heavy eyeliner observed in much ancient Silk art), and previously was ?used to deal with every conceivable sick to man?. In ayurvedic medicine it is called salai guggul, employed for centuries to deal with many conditions, such as arthritis. Modern science offers isolated the energetic compounds found to possess anti-arthritic properties. Known as boswellic acids, these types of components inhibit the actual inflammatory process, improve blood supply and stop further cartilage decrease.

Frankincense Essential Essential oil

Modern natural medicine has had to using the essential essential oil of Frankincense. The actual oil, having the warm, woody, sweet aroma having a hint of citrus fruit, is steam or even CO2 distilled in the resin. It can be used for respiratory conditions for example bronchitis, catarrh as well as asthma; for facial lines, wounds and dried out skin, and within cases of rheumatism, cystitis as well as leukorrea.

The most significant effect of the fundamental oil may be about the nervous system. Thought to be an antidepressant, the actual aroma can each relax and rejuvenate, and can assist in cases of anxious tension and tiredness. Frankincense oil consists of sesquiterpenes, which promote the limbic program, the hypothalamus, the pineal and also the pituitary glands. The oil has become being researched for it?s capability to increase hgh production. Further, it?s considered to strengthen the defense mechanisms, which may in-fact occur due to it?s uplifting qualities.

Frankincense essential oil may be used in a manner much like burning of the actual incense in religious practice. Warming inside a candle lamp or even direct application towards the temples and 3rd eye will quiet your brain, deepen the inhale, and promote meditative stillness. It is blended with Sandalwood, Myrrh as well as Cedarwood for this kind of uses, and the single-pointed focus it invokes is considered to allow the nature to soar.

Tinkering with Frankincense

Frankincense resin is accessible at reasonable expenses. Most is wildcrafted, being extracted through trees growing within the deserts of northeast The african continent ? thankfully, the actual resource is plentiful, as the trees and shrubs easily survive harvesting from the pearls. The small portions of resin can easily be lit on their own in a meal or similar pot, and allowed in order to smolder and discharge their smoke. Frankincense can also be available in ready incense sticks along with other incense preparations. As your choosing, simply light and permit some quiet time for you to experience the heavy aroma.

With the fundamental oil, a diffuser or even warming lamp may be used to disperse the aroma within a space. The oil can also be found in aromatherapy candle lights, where it is released in the heated oil underneath the burning wick. Frankincense oil could be applied directly towards the forehead (it is actually non-irritating or sensitizing) where one can both capture the actual aroma and soak up the oil straight. Again, take a minute to sit silently to perceive any kind of effects.

The wonderful gift from the Frankincense tree will come in many ways, and it has come highly recommended for a lot of thousands of many years. Try adding just a little Frankincense to your lifetime, and see exactly what the mystery is about!

Md. student held without bond in fatal stabbing (AP)

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. ? An attorney for a Maryland college student accused of stabbing a roommate to death after they argued about music says his client was acting in self-defense.

An attorney for Alexis Simpson says the stabbing was a tragic accident. Prosecutors disagree, saying Simpson had made a choice to end Dominique Frazier's life last week.

A judge ordered Simpson, 19-year-old Bowie State University student, held without bond Monday.

Court documents say Simpson stabbed Frazier inside their dormitory-style apartment after the two women argued about music playing from an iPod.

A preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 14.

What's in a Name | The Holla Agency | Media Agency | Digital ...

We have all become familiar with the name ?The Gruen Transfer? but how many people actually know what it is all about and who it was named after?

Victor Gruen (Gruenbaum), was the Austrian e?migre? who escaped Nazi-occupied Europe in 1938 and arrived in New York City with a degree in architecture, eight dollars in cash and no command of the English language.

From these humble beginnings sprang an illustrious 39-year career in the design of retail structures, which got underway with his creation of fashionable Fifth Avenue boutiques and work on renovating several Manhattan department stores.

The best known of his concepts -The Gruen Transfer which involved trying to increase consumer spending by manipulating shoppers to do impulse buying. According to Gruen, this could be accomplished via unconscious influences of lighting, ambient sound and music, visual detail of storefronts, mirrored or polished surfaces and climate control of interior spaces.

The Gruen transfer is the moment when consumers respond to ?scripted disorientation? cues in the environment. The effect of the transfer is marked by a slower walking pace.

Gruen had many innovative concepts that were utilized in constructing these new-style, suburban centres. He also had a great deal of input in the urban renewal projects that resulted from America?s shift away from downtown-centered commerce.

Realestatedeveloper.com described Victor Gruen?s designs as follows:
?Victor Gruen didn?t just design a building; he designed an archetype. He created a retailing model that became the paradigm of retail property development. He gave speeches, wrote articles, and met with scores of real estate developers and commercial contractors in later years; his influence on commercial real estate cannot be overstated. By inventing the mall he invented an entirely new shopping experience and a new business model for real estate developers, commercial contractors, construction companies, and retailers across the United States. Real estate developers quickly worked with architects and designers to develop their own shopping mall plans, and retail stores rushed to fill open space created by new construction. Some properties reached a 90 percent lease rate even before they officially opened, as retailers jockeyed for prime positions (or any position at all) in newly-constructed malls.
http://www.realestatedeveloper.com/famous-commercial-developers/shopping-mall-victor-gruen/

Throughout his career Gruen, besides heading international construction and planning projects, published several articles and books, lectured at a number of universities and was a sought-after public speaker. He analysed and tried to find solutions for the problems of modern urbanity, namely congestion and pollution caused by excessive automobile traffic and unplanned decentralization.

We continue to need forward thinking people like Gruen in the world today. Definitely a man ahead of his time.?Picture and research thanks to: http://mall-hall-of-fame.blogspot.com

Legal Assistance in Civil Cases Under Growing Threat - NYTimes.com

Both houses of Congress have indicated that they plan to cut back federal financing for the Legal Services Corporation, the nation?s largest provider of money to assist people who cannot afford lawyers in civil cases, according to an article in The National Law Journal.

The Senate Appropriations Committee?s vote this week to reduce financial support for the corporation by 2 percent comes as Jonathan Lippman, the chief judge of the New York, prepares for another round of hearings to promote the need to increase civil legal services.

Judge Lippman held hearings throughout the state last year and has four more planned this year, the first of which is scheduled for Tuesday in White Plains.

Steven Banks, the chief attorney for the city?s Legal Aid Society, said the Congress?s intended cuts to the Legal Services Corporation sent the wrong message.

?This is exactly the wrong moment to be decreasing legal assistance, which is crucial to helping children and adults living in poverty obtain the basic necessities of life,? said Mr. Banks, whose organization actually does not receive any funds from the federal corporation. Legal Aid opted out several years ago because a condition of accepting the funds would have meant that they would not have been able to represent immigrants facing deportation, Mr. Banks said.

During the economic downturn of the past few years, Mr. Banks said, Legal Aid has seen an increase in requests for legal assistance in areas like obtaining food stamps and unemployment benefits, fighting foreclosure and eviction, and getting orders of protection. Because of a lack of finances, Legal Aid must turn away eight out of every nine people seeking assistance in a civil matter, Mr. Banks said.

?In every category of legal problem on the civil side we?re continuing to see dramatic increases,? Mr. Banks said. ?One of the hardest things that our front-line staff has to do is turn away families and individuals whose evictions we know we could stop, whose foreclosures we know we could stop, who we know we could help get food stamps or unemployment benefits or access to health care, but we can?t because of lack of resources.?

The Legal Services Corporation currently receives $404 million in federal funding and the Senate?s proposal would reduce that by $8 million, according to The National Law Journal. But this cut was far less than the 26 percent reduction proposed by the House, the journal reported.

The fickleness of financing for organizations like the Legal Services Corporation was one of the main reasons Judge Lippman said he was moved to urge the State Legislature to act.

?That?s our point, that the Legal Services Corporation and all these other various means, this hodgepodge, patchwork quilt doesn?t do it,? he said. ?We have to have a permanent, reliable funding stream for civil legal services. That has to come from the public fisc.?

During last year?s hearings, Judge Lippman said, he discovered that for every dollar spent on civil legal services, $5 are returned to the state. This is because competent representation in civil cases helps keep people off costly government-financed social programs, and lawyers can also help bring money into the state by identifying federal entitlement programs that their clients are eligible for, he said.

The judge also noted that banks do not want to see people go into foreclosure, landlords do not want to have to evict people and hospitals do not want to have to deny services because it takes away from money they could be earning.

?Their bottom lines, their own well being,? Judge Lippman said, ?is served by making sure people get civil legal services.?

Health and Fitness ? Manchester Personal Trainer Reveals ...

We are forever been told that there is a new exercise, piece of equipment or a magic pill that is going to give us those 6 pack abs we all dream of. Well I am going to make this clear once and for all. You can?t cheat there is no magic pill, no miracle exercise and don?t even get me started on those stupid pieces of equipment that make you vibrate or do all kinds of silly movements.

Everyone is led to believe that if you train your abdominals day after day you are going to get a six pack. If this is true then the current holder of the most crunches performed at the Guinness world records would have the most amazing abdominals you have ever seen. However he hasn?t.

There is still people who believe if they have trained hard at the gym it is fine to have a pizza, hamburger and a chocolate shake and they will still get there six pack. Same goes for the majority of protein bars which are bluntly just over rated chocolate bars. Getting a six pack and eating crap just don?t go together.

So You want that 6 pack, a flat stomach or even an 8 pack. So how do you get one, you would like to know. The truth of the matter is in reality you know already how to get one don?t you? The main problem you have is that the PAIN of giving up your pizza, hamburger, alcoholic beverages and putting in some hard graft just seems too much for you to even give it a go.

So how can you change this mentality? First and most importantly you need to realise if you really want that flat stomach / six pack you need to associate some pleasure to achieving it. You need to imagine how good it will feel when you are walking down the beach with your ripped up ABS. You need to think of everything that is going to get in your way of achieving those dream abs. These are the PAINS use these to your advantage I WILL NOT EAT THAT AS IT IS PAIN. IT WILL STOP ME ACHIEVING MY DREAM.

Getting yourself to really set the goal in your mind of getting your dream goals is the most important step after you have done this it is actually not as hard as you would think.

Now that in your head you know what you want and you know what you defiantly don?t want to do as it will be so PAINFULL to your progress you can move forward. What I will tell you now will GUARANTEE you an 8PACK but only if you have taken on board what I have already said as your mentality is the most important aspect of achieving the dream.

SO WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TO GET THOSE LEAN ABDOMINALS

FIRST OF ALL YOU NEED A NUTRITION PROGRAM THAT

1) Is going to get you melting fat away at optimal speed
2) Is going to allow you to build lean muscle
3) That is not ridiculously difficult to follow

Now this is a lot easier to do than we are led to believe. You don?t need to follow any diet religiously or take supplements. Follow one simple rule BE A CAVEMAN/WOMAN.

Imagine there was no processed food, no unnatural sugars nothing packaged; a time when everyone was lean well there was a time. The human body has evolved over the last 2 million years. All we have to do is go back in time. Your diet should include game meat, fish, vegetables, wild fruits, eggs and nuts.

Simple eat a diet containing only these foods and you will be lean. You already knew that though didn?t you. We all know however many times they tell us special k is not good for us. So start eating the foods from above having a diet high in animal fat and low in carbohydrates.

Did you know eating your averaged sized potato is the same as eating 4 teaspoons of sugar this causes your blood sugar to go up to levels the body doesn?t want. As a resort you end up storing more fat and wanting to snack more, causing you to store more fat. So if you want to ditch the fat ditch the starchy carbohydrates and processed food.

IN TERMS OF EXERCISE WHAT DO I NEED TO DO

Ok so let?s start with spot reduction, you can?t reduce fat from just one area (except lipo suction and even that won?t last)

You need to reduce body fat levels in general. This involves full body weight based training anything from bodyweight to full on power lifting and adding some interval based training into the mix.

Now before I continue I want to explain that if your body is not in optimal alignment (if you work in an office then there?s 95% chance its not) then the exercise you are doing is not as effective as it could be. Book in to see a Kinetic chain specialist. If your spine is anteriorally tilted then your abdominals are constantly stretched and you will find it impossible to get the abdominals you want.

In terms of rectus abdominal exercises (the six pack). It doesn?t matter what exercises your doing. All that?s important is getting the pubic synthesis and xyphoid process (hip bones and middle point below the chest) as close to each other as possible putting the muscle under full contraction.

SO WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO SUMARY
? Get the right mental attitude
? Start eating like a caveman
? Approach the body as a whole
? Don?t worry about silly abdominal exercises

Dominant Djokovic claims maiden U.S. Open (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Novak Djokovic provided irrefutable proof that he is the world's best player right now and perhaps on his way to becoming one of the greatest ever with a 6-2 6-4 6-7 6-1 victory over Rafa Nadal in the U.S. Open final on Monday.

In claiming his third grand slam title of an amazing season, Djokovic produced an incredible display of shotmaking and courage when his body started to wilt during a classic slugfest at Flushing Meadows that lasted four hours and 10 minutes.

The Serbian's lower back and his ribs were aching and his legs were starting to cramp up, but he ignored the pain and focused all his energy on the muscular Nadal, who was threatening to mount a comeback.

The Spaniard won the third set in a tiebreaker to keep the match alive and the raucous crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium were screaming their lungs out in the hope that it might go to five sets.

Both players appeared on the brink of total exhaustion but Djokovic remained calm and composed.

"In the big events and matches, the winner is decided by small margins, a couple of points," he explained after claiming his first U.S. Open title and fourth major overall.

"I guess the winner is the one that believes in victory more than the other."

The victories have been flowing thick and fast for Djokovic this year. He has won 10 titles this season, including the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, and no-one seems to know how to beat him, least of all Nadal.

Twelve months ago, the Spaniard was on top of the world after defeating Djokovic in New York to complete his own collection of grand slam titles, but now he can only look on as his rival has replaced him as the top dog in men's tennis.

Djokovic has usurped Nadal as the world number one and beaten him in six finals this year, including at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

"Six straight loses, for sure that's painful but I'm going to work every day until that changes," Nadal said.

"So I have a goal. It's going to be tough to change the situation, but the goal is easy to see."

The pair produced a final of the highest quality, with some incredible rallies and shotmaking that whipped the centre court crowd into a frenzy. Nadal had his chances but it was Djokovic who won the key moments.

EPIC GAME

No matter how hard he tried, Nadal could not find a way to get on top of the Serbian, who had saved two match points in his epic semi-final win over Roger Federer to show that he has all the instincts of a prize fighter to go with his sublime skill.

In the opening set, the defending champion jumped out to a 2-0 lead, only to be reined in by Djokovic, who kept the Spanish left-hander under constant pressure with some monster returns that landed right at his feet.

"It was a tough match, physically, mentally, everything," Nadal said.

"I fought until the last point. I tried my best at every moment. I am happy with a lot of things, much happier than the previous matches against him."

Djokovic, mixing power with some delicate chip shots that often left Nadal in two minds, reeled off six straight games to take the opening set after 53 minutes but suddenly found himself down 2-0 again at the start of the second.

He broke back after a titanic third game that lasted more than 17 minutes and included eight deuces to lead 4-2. Nadal got back to 4-4 but another sloppy service game cost him the set.

The third set was the longest, lasting 84 minutes. Both players were broken three times but Djokovic led 6-5 and had the chance to serve out the match.

To his credit, Nadal fought back and forced the match into a fourth set but he was drained by the effort.

Djokovic was tired as well and called for a medical timeout at the start of the fourth set but he recovered quickly and ran away with the set to seal his first U.S. Open title and the fourth of his career.

Only the French Open remains missing from his trophy cabinet.

"I still want to win many more events, many more major events," Djokovic said.

"It would be unbelievable to be able to complete the grand slam, to win the French Open. It's something that is definitely an ambition, but it's going to take time."

US envoys back to Mideast to try to avert crisis (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration's top two Mideast peace envoys are returning to the region this week in a last-ditch bid to avert a looming crisis over a Palestinian bid for statehood recognition at the United Nations later this month.

U.S. officials said Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton plans to announce on Tuesday that David Hale, the special envoy for Middle East peace, and Dennis Ross, the top Mideast adviser at the National Security Council, will make the trip as the administration seeks to bring Israel and the Palestinians back to stalled peace talks. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of Clinton's announcement.

Hale and Ross were last in the region just over a week ago but failed to convince Palestinian officials to abandon their quest for U.N. recognition. Israel is vehemently opposed to such a move and the United States has threatened to veto it in the U.N. Security Council. However, the Palestinians have suggested that instead of going to the Security Council, they may seek a vote on a recognition resolution at the U.N. General Assembly, where the U.S. cannot veto it and it is likely to pass.

Israel and the United States insist that the United Nations is not the forum to create a state and that a future Palestine must come as the result of direct negotiations.

U.S. News & World Report's Shocker-Free 2012 College Rankings ...

U.S. News World Report released its annual list of America?s Best Colleges today and the news is, well, not exactly surprising.

Like most every year, the Ivies are at the head of the pack, holding all four of the top spots, closely followed by the four other Ivy League schools, which all place in the top 20.

While there wasn?t too much movement at the top, there were an overwhelming number of ties on the list this year. There are two universities in the No. 1 spot, five schools tied for fifth, six colleges in 62nd place, seven vying for 72nd and 10 colleges tied for 101st place, among many, many other ties.

(PHOTOS: The Evolution of the College Dorm)

The number of ties further calls into question the usefulness of the college ranking system, which though it is U.S. News? bread and butter, has been questioned in the past for using dubious statistics and fueling crazed competition among colleges hungry for prestige.

Nevertheless, here are this year?s 10 Best Colleges in the Nation:

1. Harvard University
1. Princeton University
3. Yale University
4. Columbia University
5. California Institute

Smoke forces closure of Indonesian airport

Officials say smoke from fires set by slash-and-burn farmers has forced the closure of at least one airport in western Indonesia. Parts of neighboring Singapore and Malaysia have also been blanketed in a heavy white haze from the fires.

Airport official Abiyoso said Tuesday that the smoke was so thick that authorities had no choice but to shut down Sultan Taha airport on Sumatra island.

The dry-season haze is caused by fires set to clear land for agricultural and other development projects across Indonesia. They have plagued Southeast Asia almost every year since the 1990s.

They have stoked regional tensions and put attention on the Indonesian government's inability to enforce its own laws.

Egypt stocks drop after Israeli Embassy attack (AP)

CAIRO ? Egypt's benchmark stock index fell slightly on Sunday, weighed down by investor unease after the storming of Israel's embassy and protests in Cairo over the weekend. Inflation, meanwhile, eased in August to 8.5 percent on a slower increase in food prices.

The Egyptian Exchange's EGX30 index closed almost 1.2 weaker, at 4,698 points the first day of the trading week. The index's year-to-date losses are at about 34 percent.

"To be honest, we were expecting a lot worse than this ? maybe a fall of 3 to 4 percent," said Khaled Naga, a senior broker with Mega Investments. "Even so, I'm not recommending anyone buy at this time. ... There could still be a lot of problems cropping up this week."

But in a measure of good news, the government's statistical arm announced Saturday that annual urban inflation had dropped to 8.5 percent in August, from 10.4 percent in July. The decline came as food inflation, which accounts for over 40 percent of the consumer price index, increased at a slower pace in the month ? 12.2 percent compared with 16.7 percent the prior month.

Food inflation, in particular, was seen as one of the factors that fueled Egyptians' frustrations ahead of the Jan. 25 revolution, and a decline in that key figure could help ease some of the economic pressure the country's more than 80 million citizens feel daily.

In addition, Suez Canal revenues, a key source of foreign income for the government, climbed to $472.9 million in August, gaining 7.9 percent on the same month in 2010 and hitting a roughly three-year high, government figures showed.

Analysts warned that Egypt still faced major pressures in trying to retrench and rebuild its economy, which recorded GDP growth of 1.8 percent in the 2010-2011 fiscal year. Before the Jan. 25 uprising, economic growth had been projected at nearly 6 percent.

London-based Capital Economics, which is forecasting that GDP will contract by 1 percent in the current fiscal year, said in a recent research note that given the current global economic climate, "it is too early to expect a rapid recovery."

In a reflection of the difficulty Egyptian officials have faced, the country's net international reserves have slipped to slightly more than $25 billion, roughly $11 billion below their December 2010 levels. The slide, in part, is linked to efforts to support the Egyptian currency.

The storming of the Israeli Embassy over the weekend was the most serious challenge to relations between the two countries since the signing of their peace treaty in 1979. An angry mob, for hours, laid siege to the embassy, trapping six Israeli guards in a safe room before they were rescued by Egyptian commandoes.

The incident at the Israeli Embassy spoke not only to the anger over the shooting death of six Egyptian soldiers along the country's border with Israel last month, but also the hostility toward the Jewish state many feel in the country despite the peace agreement. The soldiers were killed as Israeli troops pursued militants who had launched an attack inside Israel that killed eight Israelis.

It also reflected the pressures and challenges confronting Egypt's military rulers, who are balancing often opposing ends of placating an irate Egyptian populace after Mubarak's ouster and pushing the country toward an elected civilian leadership.

The 18-day uprising that began in late January opened the floodgates to decades of pent up resentment over a widening income disparity, shoddy salaries, poor social and educational systems and the general sense in the Arab world's most populous country that opportunities were something that came through nepotism and cronyism versus skills and perseverance.

The continuing mass protests have battered Egypt's economy, undercutting vital tourism revenue and crimping foreign direct investment.

In a reversal of an earlier decision that would likely have done little to spur tourism, the government froze a ruling requiring tourists and other visitors to apply for visas before arrival in the country, the official MENA news agency reported, citing the deputy tourism minister.
