Industrial technology is a discipline which focuses on business, engineering and technical principles to execute engineering designs. This involves understanding the process, physical and technical requirements, user interaction and operating systems involved. Related occupations are also involved in repair, maintenance and improvement of industrial equipment and processes.

The Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering has accredited many associate?s and bachelor?s degree programs in industrial technology, and most careers require at least an associate?s degree. In February 2010, Indeed.com listed a national average salary of $70,000 per year for careers related to industrial technology.

Engineering Technician

An engineering technician works closely with engineers to realize a design concept. These professionals are involved with the application aspect of the design and assist in the construction, maintenance, testing and usability of industrial processes and equipment. Many of these professionals work in a manufacturing or production environment and also repair and maintain industrial equipment.

This occupation requires vocational training in industrial machinery or an associate?s degree in industrial technology.

Process Engineer

A process engineer utilizes many facets of business including budgets, personnel, production processes, available materials and facilities to improve overall manufacturing processes. This requires extensive analysis of product or production requirements to establish more cost-effective and safer processes.

These occupations require at least a bachelor?s degree in industrial technology or an engineering discipline.

Production Manager

Industrial production managers direct and coordinate a production process to produce a large amount of goods or products in a manufacturing environment. These professionals ensure that quality, safety and production levels meet the profit goals of an organization. This includes hiring, training and motivating employees.

These occupations often require a bachelor?s degree in industrial technology, engineering or logistics. Employment opportunities are greater for those who obtain a bachelor?s degree in industrial technology because of the combination of business and engineering skills in this discipline.
