BLOG: The dirty truth about Harry Reid?s clean energy

?

In a recent op-ed entitled ?The truth about clean energy in Nevada,? Sen. Harry Reid produced enough hot air with his green energy propaganda to power a small town in rural Nevada.?

Having killed Yucca Mountain ? a potential gold mine of revenue and jobs for Nevada tied to clean, reliable and affordable nuclear power ? Sen. Reid now has his political phasers locked in on the clean, reliable and affordable coal-fueled power plant ironically named ?Reid Gardner? located in rural Moapa.

According to Sen. Reid, Reid Gardner is ?literally killing? residents who live nearby, without producing ? you know ? proof.? Kinda like his unsubstantiated claim that Mitt Romney hasn?t paid federal taxes for the last ten years.? You know, guilty until proven innocent.

Anyway, at his National Clean Energy Summit earlier this month, Sen. Reid demanded that NV Energy immediately close the Reid Gardner plant, calling it a ?dirty relic.?? But if the senator is going to talk about ?truth,? then let?s get to some truths about Reid Gardner.

?

1.)?? Reid Gardner is one of the cleanest coal-fueled power plants in the country today.

2.)?? The number of visible emissions incidences has dropped from 825 in 2005 to just 7 in 2011.

3.)?? Electricity produced by Reid Gardner is 3 to 4 times less expensive than from Sen. Reid?s ?clean? energy sources.

4.)?? Reid Gardner wasn?t even operating for the first five months of this year.? It is generally put into service only during periods of high energy usage which, in southern Nevada, is obviously summertime.

5.)?? Reid Gardner has a peak generating capacity of over 500 megawatts.? Now, I don?t know exactly what a megawatt is, but I do know that Sen. Reid?s highly-touted the Nellis Air Force Base solar plant cranks out only about 13 megawatts.

6.)?? Unlike solar, Reid Gardner is capable of producing electricity 24/7 - even on cloudy days and at night.

7.)?? Immediately closing Reid Gardner would kill about 150 jobs at a time when Nevada still leads the nation in unemployment.

?

And here?s a final truth for you: It?s not called ?green? energy for nothing; because it costs a fortune.? But Sen. Reid apparently doesn?t care how much it costs you, as long as he makes the enviro-extremists at the Sierra Club happy.

Look?maybe someday solar, wind and bio-mass energy will be reliable and inexpensive enough to make Nevada energy independent.? Maybe.? But the real fact is, blind pursuit of green energy with little to no consideration of market demand and cost is simply not responsible, especially in the present economic times.

Like it or not, inexpensive and reliable coal-fueled electricity allows us to enjoy an affordable standard of living not possible with unreliable, extremely expensive ?green? energy alternatives.? And that?s the truth.

Movie review: Delpy embraces the odd in '2 Days in New York' | The ...

(Courtesy photo) Chris Rock and Julie Delpy star in the romantic comedy "2 Days in New York," which Delpy directed and co-wrote.

Review ? French filmmaker makes funny cross-cultural tale.

It used to be that to capture the craziness of New York City on film, it took a native ? say, Woody Allen or Spike Lee ? to do it justice. But Julie Delpy, the French actress and now accomplished filmmaker, does a bang-up job in "2 Days in New York," a hilarious and fast-moving farce of strained family relations.

I approached "2 Days in New York" without watching Delpy?s 2007 film, "2 Days in Paris," but it didn?t seem to matter, as Delpy synopsizes things quite well in her introduction, with puppets. Her character, Marion, is a French-born New York art photographer with a 2-year-old son, Lulu. (Lulu?s father, Jack, played in the first film by Adam Goldberg, is absent here.) Marion is living with her boyfriend, Mingus (Chris Rock, who is delightfully deadpan), a Village Voice writer and public-radio host with a zombie-obsessed 7-year-old daughter, Willow (Talen Riley).

?2 Days in New York?

Julie Delpy? s frantic romantic comedy is also a funny valentine to New York City.

Where ? Broadway Centre Cinemas.

When ? Opens today Friday, Aug. 24.

Rating ? R for language, sexual content, some drug use and brief nudity.

Running time ? 96 minutes; in English and in French with subtitles.

The two days of the title, centered on Halloween, are stressful ones for Marion. She?s opening a gallery show featuring photos of her past boyfriends and including a performance piece in which she plans to sell her soul (complete with notarized contract). She?s also playing host to her rowdy father, Jeannot (played by Albert Delpy, Julie?s real-life father), and her sex-starved sister, Rose (Alexia Landeau), and ? as a surprise to everyone ? Rose?s boyfriend, Manu (Alex Nahon), who used to date Marion, is along for the trip. Manu?s unexpected arrival strains the sleeping arrangements, while his obnoxious and slightly racist behavior rankles Mingus and Marion.

Delpy, co-writing with Landeau (with some added material contributed by Nahon), juggles the many oddball characters with the dexterity of a circus juggler. There?s a side-splitting dinner-table scene that bounces from Mingus? game attempts to understand Jeannot and Manu?s French to Marion and Rose shouting at each other in a sibling-rivalry argument that Woody himself would have been proud to write ? and is then topped by Manu?s move to buy pot from a dealer he brings up to Mingus? and Marion?s apartment.

Delpy deftly mixes in some charmingly offbeat moments ? like Mingus? office monologues, which he delivers speaking to a cardboard cutout of Barack Obama ? that match Marion?s increasingly frazzled life. She also brings a surprising amount of heart, in a masterful performance that sees Marion trying to cope with the death of her mother (played in the first film by Delpy?s mother, Marie Pillet, who died in 2009), her feelings for Mingus, and her self-doubt about her art and her life.

She also celebrates the Big Apple, gloriously depicting a melting pot that embraces Asian massage parlors, hipster artists, clueless sightseers, blended families and, yes, French filmmakers. She makes New York, and Marion?s crazy life, worth spending more than two days getting to know.

Michelle Mohr's Inspiring Weight-Loss Tale - Muscle Works Magazine

Michelle Mohr, 27, of Florida, was admittedly ?super, super strict? about her diet when she decided to lose weight after years of ?feeling invisible? in her group of ?normal-sized? friends. She was 5?4? and 210 pounds. She?s now 110 pounds and has never been more confident.

?I never thought I would look like this in a bikini!? she says.

Michelle reflects on her past:

?Growing up, I was always the fat kid. Lunch would be pizza, fries, and nachos. I?d come home from school and eat a box of stuffing that could serve a family of four!

?Then I?d eat two plates of spaghetti for dinner. I was teased by kids and so embarrassed. I remember sitting on the couch and bawling, ?I?m never going to be thin!?

?But after college I changed my life. I read magazines, watched videos online, and tailored my own plan. Now I go to the gym five days a week. Recently I?ve been more comfortable buying swimsuits and going to the beach in a group. I love having confidence!?

Here?s an example of Michelle?s daily meal plan:

Breakfast: 2 scramled egg whites, 1/2 cup fat-free cottage cheese, an apple, a slice of toast and 9 almonds.

Lunch: Salad with chicken, chickpeas, mushrooms, celery and tomato.

Snack: String cheese and 1/2 cup grapes.

Dinner: Grilled chicken with zucchini and half a sweet potato.

Dessert: Sugar-free fudge pop

New York sleaze parade: when will it ever end?

The Issue: The taxpayer-funded jobs that Bronx Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera gave to her boyfriends.

***

While Bronx Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera abuses taxpayer dollars by hiring her boyfriends ? one to run her non-profit organization at $75,000 a year, and the other in a community relations position at $1,100 a week ? state Democratic Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver stands by her side (?A Test for Cuomo?s JCOPE,? There has always been a lot of lip service about cleaning up New York?s political corruption, but that?s all it is.

Between ex-City Councilman Larry Seabrook, former state Sen. Pedro Espada, former state Sen. Carl Kruger and now Rivera doling out taxpayer money to her boyfriends, there is no end to these public disgraces. Either nobody sees or they refuse to notice politicians shoveling cash to friends, lovers and family members. Is it because New York is top-heavy with Democrats, or is it because so many are involved in their own kind of corruption that they dare not speak out?

Doesn?t this look fishy?

These machine politicians afflict our state like roaches in a kitchen.

The only thing more disgusting than Rivera mugging defiantly in her zoot suit, the appropriate garb of mobsters, is her roster of lackeys.
